you can try steeping a tea bag and using it as a compress when it cools several times a day. It is the acid in the tea that helps so if your skin is very sensitive, you might still have a reaction but hopefully not as bad as some of the otc treatments with all their chemicals in.
holding an ice cube to the cold sore helps with swelling and redness. Beats trying to cover it up.
You could try raw honey too to the cold sore. some old research on honey and herpes and if nothing else, tastes better than the otc creams.
If you know you have triggers like sun exposure or when you get a cold, you get a cold sore ( hence the nickname of cold sore), you can take a cold sore dose of antivirals to try to help ward off a full blown cold sore too. I think we all have had summer days where we didn't realize we would be outside so long and were unprepared and you get a sunburn :(
Welcome to the forum. There isn't any good scientific evidence that "natural" remedies have anay benefit. Any number of creams and ointments will be soothing, things containing aloe, for example, but there is no evidence that various plant products, lysine, etc actually speed healing. Most important, don't be tempted to spend a lot of money on things that aren't likely to help. Even the scientifically proved medications -- like acyclovir or valacyclovir orally, or pencilovir cream (Denavir®) -- speed heaing by only a day or two at best.
All things considered, you'll probably do best by preventing outbreaks to the extent you can. Many oral herpes outbreak are triggered by sun exposure, and a good sunblock can be very effective, especially when strong sun exposure is expected (summertime at the beach, skiing, etc). Or if your outbreaks are especially frequent, you could consider daily preventive treatment with valacyclovir orally -- but my guess is you'lre not keen on that approach.
Anyway, I hope this helps a little bit. Best wishes and good luck.
