Could a vaccination against chicken pox cause a rise in a HSV test result?

Hello Everyone,

My boyfriend and I have been dating for a few months now and we both decided to get tested for STDs. My results all came back negative as did his except for his HSV2 test. It came back 1.10 - equivocal. The doctor said that he should retest in a month to see if his number will go up, which he has already made an appointment to do. He swears he has never had an outbreak, been extremely careful, etc.

My boyfriend is also applying for his green card. In order to get it, he had to get immunized for everything, which includes chicken pox. He did this a week before he got all his STD tests done. He is still going to get retested to make sure he doesn't have HSV2, but my question is, can getting immunized for chicken pox affect his test results for HSV? I heard that HSV and chicken pox are in the same family so I am starting to think this is what is happening.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you everyone! <3

his hsv2 igg is actually negative. If it's been at least 3 months since he last had sex with anyone besides you, no reason for further testing since there's no way it would be a recently acquired infection for him.

no, his chicken pox vaccine isn't an issue - he's negative!  the equivocal range messes up many providers unfortunately :(

As for the testing you should let Grace or someone qualified to do so respond. Never having an outbreak is a good sign, but never makes anyone in the clear with herpes. Around 80-90% of people with hsv2 herpes do not recognize symptoms or pass them off as something else. Also being "careful" helps(condoms I'm assuming) but only protects from the virus about 30%. A well known myth is that condoms protect 100% from all stds is simply not true. They do reduce other STDs down to merely no risk, but in the case of herpes  it does not cover all the areas that the virus could shed from. You're asking about the issues of false positives which I could dive into, but it is merely guessing as his test results are neither positive or negative. Dr HHH on the expert forum has stated that chicken pox can alter a test result for hsv2. Hope this helps
