First Cold Sour

I recently got a cold sore on my lip.  I'm 38.  I believe this is my first one.  Following dating a new guy and getting sexual, I recently wrote b/c I had a pimple on my genitals that showed up a 10 days after our first time getting sexual.  I had it cultured and it was said that the herpes virus could not be isolated (aka negative result, I believe).  Following this scare, which was a few weeks ago/a month ago or so, I got this cold sore on my mouth.  I recently had a minor eye lid surgery done.  I'm not sure if that is relevant or would lead to an outbreak.  I guess what I'm wondering is ...is it likely that it is a new infection?  And, can a partner spead Herpes 1 to your mouth and co-currently to your genitals?  I've dated guys before with Herpes 1 but never broke out before.  Also, I have a lot of children in my life.  I'm worried about spreading to them.  How careful do I have to be?  I read somewhere that 90% of the population has herpes 1.  Is that true?
Best,
Julia

It is unlikely to get NEW genital HSV 1 infection after having oral HSV 1 infection, but it is possible to get both sites infected at the same time, that is, someone kisses and receives oral sex from the same person.

I would recommend that the cold sore, if you get another, be swab tested for herpes just to be certain.

Yes, he is the only partner I have.  I had the symptom on my genital cultured and it came back negative.  I didn't have it tested...the cold sore but it definitely looked like one.  Can you get HSV 1 on both your lips and genitals?  I thought if you got HSV 1 on your lips that you couldn't have it also (co-occuring) on your genitals.

Hi Julia,
the actual percentage is 56% if people between 14 and 49 have HSV 1.
did you have the cold sore swab tested to confirm that it was herpes?  what did it look like?  Have you ever had a herpes antibody test done?
did someone who prescribed the valtrex think it was a cold sore?
was the person you describe as a sexual partner the giver of oral sex to you?
Yes, I would take another dose - 4 - 500 mg tabs at once, about 12 hours after the first dose.  that is the recommended dose for cold sores.
