HSV 1 kissing and oral sex

So i recently got my first outbreak of cold sores in my mouth, basically on my tongue and tonsils. I have never had a cold sore before i got sick with a sinus infection, ear infection and flu like symptoms. After doing some research on HSV 1 I am now very concerned about giving it to my boyfriend, i just really wanna know is it safe to kiss once the sores are no longer present or do you have to wait so many days after to be safe. Also is it safe for me to perform oral sex without a condom on him if sores cant be seen... do i need to get on medication now? I just have so many questions. I am a highly sexual person in a monogamous relationship and this just came out of no where. How do others deal with this situation?
Thank you to any willing to help with answers.

Thank you for responding, I was seen by 2 different physicians and was treated with valtrex having taken two 1mg tablets twice for one day. Altho this was thru an urgent care setting, I am scheduled to see my primary next week, unfortunately my daughter has a weak immune system and just 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed and before her showing the presence of them and being diagnosed by her primary doc....I had never had a single cold sore.

how were you diagnosed as having hsv1 orally?

your bf is going to have to get tested to know his own status. you two can't make educated decisions about precautions until you know who has what.
