HSV-1

A week ago I had 2 small abrasions appear on the side of my penis.  There was no discharge or anything, it just looked like I somehow injured myself.  I have been married for over a decade so I went and had them checked out.  The physician said that while they did not look like anything significant, we agreed to do a full test.

I stupidly had intercourse with my wife over that weekend, unprotected.

My test results came back today and I was told I have tested positive for HSV-1.  Obviously I am freaking out.  I am dealing with a nurse practitioner, and so the information she has given me has been insufficient to say the least.

I am trying to figure out how it is possible for me to manifest a virus on my genitals that is normally described as a "cold sore"?  What precautions do I need to take, and how likely is it that I transmitted HSV-1 to my spouse during unprotected sex? What is going to happen in the future as far as partners are concerned?  Should I even be concerned about kissing my kids goodnight????

Can HSV-1 be  transmitted through genital to genital contact???  Like I said,  the internet is a mindfield!!!!!

Two things I need to throw in here:

1.  When I was in my early 20's (I am late 30's now) I seriously dated and almost married a woman who was positive for herpes (I don't know which kind).  She managed the virus (knew when she was having an outbreak) and because I loved her I said I didn't care.  The nurse practitioner is telling me I could have been carrying this for over a decade and because of the stress I am under it manifested itself now.  There is no way to know.

2.  My wife and I had been going through some tough times, we separated for a short time but have since reconciled.  I did have an indiscretion, oral and vaginal sex was performed, she is the only one, it happened in the last 3 weeks.  My wife and I have agreed to reconcile.  Is it possibe that I got this from my indiscretion???

I just am having a very hard time grappling with the idea that I caught what it sounds like is obtained through oral sex manifesting on my penis, and that now I may have infected my spouse.

Thanks for your help and understanding. Trying to grapple with what I may have done.

Hi Grace - I read my post and your response.  I hope I did not offend you.

I have read your other responses and would very much like your opinion on this.

The information seems to be all over the place.

I hope I did not offend you with the remark about the NP.  If I did I apologize.
