HSV Question

I am fairly certain that I just contracted HSV. (I had a complete STD panel about a year ago which was clean, so this would have to be new.)

I have about a 1.25" diameter patch of blistery legions on my upper right pubic region (in the pubic hair near the top). The skin beneath is bright pink. Honestly, based on the photos I've seen, there is no question about the diagnosis. It is a group of small watery blisters which break easily and are now forming a crusty scab. Abrevia (which I had on hand for cold sores) seems to relieve the pain, which was not extreme. My genitals are not affected. I have soreness in the tendons of my upper legs as if I had run a 10k the day before-this began after the blisters, rather than before. No fever.

I had protected vaginal sex with two women recently. The condom slipped off during withdrawal once, but I didn't think that would be much of a risk. She was on top and had to remove the condom herself. She told me she had recently been tested for HIV. HSV never came up. We used a new condom after that.

I have been under a tremendous amount of stress recently and had just had a rare (for me) outbreak of cold sores for which I was taking the two dose course of Valtrex. (If I remember correctly, I had just begun the Valtrex prescription the day the condom slipped off.)

I know I need to be tested, but am just trying to make sense of this.

I had a pimple (which I removed) in the exact same spot as the genital HSV outbreak at the same time I had the cold sore. Is it possible that I spread HSV1 from my cold sore to the genital area via that pimple?

I realize this seems very unlikely, but I have no other idea how this might have happened. If not that, then I got HSV2 in spite of a condom.

If it IS possible to self infect with HSV1, would that be a permanent genital infection? Or would it just be a one time thing in that case?
How soon should I be tested?
Should I be tested for anything else?

The bottom line is that you need to get a blood test.  Don't hide from it, if you can't stomach seeing a doctor, go to privatemdlabs or some other online provider and order it that way.

Nobody can use psychic powers to diagnose you on the internet.  They can try to tell you what you want to hear, but the truth is what people need to hear.  Get an IgG test immediately.

If it comes up equivocally positive, repeat it in a few months or find a Biokit provider.

taking valtrex when you had sex can't protect you from contracting herpes.

you have obvious cold sores so you know you have hsv1 orally. not likely at all that you'd contract hsv1 genitally at this point.

Today I have a fever of 99.7. Is it normal for the fever to begin after the blisters crust over... of do I need to be concerned about something else?

The Valtrex was about 10 days ago when I had the cold sore, not now. This appeared about 3 days ago. What I meant was that I was taking Valtrex for the cold sore at the time that I suppose I would have contracted this. (Wouldn't that make me quite unlucky...?)

Does the blood test let you know the type (1 or 2). I have read a LOT about HSV1 being fairly mild when it occurs in the genital area (and vice versa). True?

Wow... never knew that about condoms. I wonder why that's not better known?

What is the purpose of two tests? Does it fail to take hold sometimes?

unfortunately you wouldn't benefit from a herpes lesion culture at this point due to the valtrex you took for your cold sore.  I'd still be seen and get it looked at. get a herpes igg blood test now and repeat it in a few months. should you get a return of symptoms before then. be seen within 48 hours for a lesion culture and typing of symptoms.

no , you didn't transmit your hsv1 to your genital area.

condoms are only a 30% reduction in the transmission of hsv2. You can't rely on using them as meaning you couldn't have contracted hsv2.

fyi - abreva barely got fda approval to say it speeds healing of cold sores. it had absolutely no effect on genital herpes so it was never marketed for that use. it's a very overpriced teeny tube.
