Herpes Throat

Hi Folks...

I have read on many other posts that is possible to get herpes (hsv2) of the throat (with no mouth sores but rare).. and some other websites say its not possible.. I trust the experts on this site so I am assuming that it is possible..

Does anyone know if a primary throat herpes breakout clears up within 5 days of symptoms appearing only to return 3/4 days later as bad as ever?

2 doctors told me I had strep.. second one tested for strep came back positive.. could 2 doctors be wrong about this? Thanks !!

Thanks again guys.. really do appreciate the info on this.

One last question - is 5 days too quick for primaryThroat Herpes to subside? And could a recurrence happen so soon after a primary outbreak ie 4 days after?

Thanks again

Antibiotics would have no effect on hsv so strep makes sense. I wouldn't read into your symptoms being hsv related. Like Life360 has stated. Hsv2 orally is very rare while strep is not.

Many thanks for your response!

Just a few other points of note.. Amoxicillin was prescribed by the first doctor. The second doctor prescribed me a stronger penicillin based antibiotic blaming the re-occurrence on the weak initial treatment stating that a stronger antibiotic would have cured it. this would appear to make sense..

I'm just freaked due to the time-frame of the infection and the exposure.. (3 days gap approx) No other obvious symptoms ie genital, only the tonsillitis from the apparent strep

It just seems a huge coincidence.. I have read that a strep test is only accurate if there is no virus present, if the patient was previously diagnosed with strep (I was) since the bacteria can already live in the oral cavity..

Hi, in a sense you cant GET herpes in the throat but a person could have a recurrent outbreak from those that already have it its rare and with hsv2 its even rarer and would not even consider it. Hsv2 really prefers the genital area not the oral. Also you tested positive for strep so go with that.
