Herpes Cure
Does anyone have any idea of what stages of finding a cure for herpes that there is out there? Or are the valtrex people content with make bazillions of dollars and there isn't much going on as far as finding a cure?

The problem with Herpes is that even though your immune system can kill the virus and anti-virals like Valaciclavor can stop it copying/multiplying by tricking the virus.. The problem is that the virus retracts and goes latent (to sleep) which effectively stops the immune system or any drug from killing it, so it stays in your body for life and can come back.
Your immune system can kill viruses, Influenza is a virus also and your immune system can kill it cause it does not hide dormant in the nerves like HSV does. If HSV didn't go dormant then you could effectually kill all of the virus like your body does when you have the flu.
They are close to finding a way to get the virus out of latency and killing it off with a combination of anti-virals and your immune system would clean up the rest. They have already found the VP-16 protein does this, and also microRNA that does this too... and this was only as recently as April 2009, which is why I am saying to have hope even though they have a long way to go.. they just have to find a way to get drugs that do this and apply it to humans instead of mice.

You can look at it another way too... The patent on Valtrex will expire this year.. which means that Generic Valtrex will now flood the market, which means the $43 billon or so GallaxoSmithKline make from Valtrex annually will effectively disappear overnight.
The past has shown that when a Patent ends, the pharmaceutical companies will always then come out with something way better so they can regain market control and get sales back... The GSK patent on aciclovor ended then bang we get valaciclovor.. now that is ending and something better will come out.

This will effectually mean that it will end the dominance of the huge players like GSK and Pfizer have over a particular drug and stop other smaller pharmaceuticals that may have a cure or a better drug entering the market.
Progress is being made so just have hope...

Find yourself a homeopath, Shaman, Ayurved or Chinese Dr. They will all laugh when you say there is no cure. Ayurveda for example has documented herpes for 4000 yrs and prescribed a cure for eons. Why do we not hear about these cures?
1. No one can afford to spend millions on researching a herb. There is no patent for herbs and hence no financial gain for the people spending the money to research the herb. The entire herpes community was thrilled when Hypericum Mysorense was found in 2003 to completely supress the virus in a lab. However the researches never got a dime to continue the research and moved onto other projects. You can contact the head reseacher Dr Vijayan and he will tell you that they were forced to move onto other projects owing to lack of funding!
2. The method of testing is in itself flawed. We can cure a virus but will still have anti bodies that our body created to fight the virus. So using this yardstick of antibodies no virus will ever be cured. However no one ever says Im not cured of chicked pox even though they have antibodies. Quiz your Dr on this and realize how squeezed into a box the entire medical fraternity it!
For me the reasoning became crystal clear one week after hearing the news thatI had herpes.
1. Follow my miami fl Dr who said he cant cure herpes and gave me a prescription for Acyclovir along with a warning that over dosage would create liver damage
2. Follow one or all of 3 natural medicine Dr's that said they can cure herpes without side effects from the medicine.
I took the second option. The only side effect I experienced was immense personal remembrance and growth.

I think the problem is that herpes is the "secret" disease. Nobody talks about it and nobody makes a fuss so the efforts are more geared toward AIDS and those problems more visible.
The truth is it's an awful disease. It makes you live in a limbo world where you can't tell people because they'll look at you differently and treat you differently. There should be a herpes convention where people can go in secret and meet other people living in the netherworld.
So back to the point. I think cure .. shmure.. I don't think anyone cares enough. We need some billionaires to catch it so they pay for a cure to be found. If I had a billion I'd spend most of it on research.

No cure in sight though plenty of folks out there looking for one. Please do not fall into the trap of thinking that the pharmacutical companies would rather sell you drugs than cure you - that's just erroneous thinking since most folks who have herpes, don't treat it. They actually have more to gain from an actual cure than they do treating herpes since folks would shell out decent money to get tested and cured if there was actually a cure. You know I once did a poll on another forum asking folks how much they would pay for a herpes cure. Out of the folks that responded - almost everyone who responded by saying that they'd pay for a cure said that they would pay anywhere from $1000-$5000 for it out of pocket with some folks saying they'd pay even more than that for it. Ironically the most number of folks who responded said they'd never pay for a cure because it's not worth it to them to have one and they'd rather put the money to other uses.
The newest potential cure on the block that I believe janus is referring to is still in the petri dish. If by chance it does show to be effective it will be a minimum of 10 years before it's widely available, not a year. We have a checks and balance system in place for good reason plus this hasn't even made it to animal studies yet so it'll be awhile :(

Wow I really hope so. Well I'm just lookin' for God to heal me with him anything is possible.
It depends on what level of testing they are at. I am sure they are moving quite quickly, as the issue has become endemic. Additionally, advances in medicine are making significant strides as of late. There is now a patent on a cure for HIV.... I can't remember the patent number, but it's waiting to be tested and will likely be available sooner than later. If they can solve HIV, they should certainly be able to tackle herpes.
I really hope they do find a cure because I'm tired of this and I just got diagnosed 3-4 weeks ago.
I didn't know they were that far along....guess that they could have a cure within the next year or so then....pending approval.
