Herpes Information

Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me learn more about Herpes. I recently got out of a 2 year relationship and we always had protected sex and unprotected oral over this span. As far as I know she never cheated on me. I have no symptoms currently or in the past 2 years that would lead me to believe I have herpes but since I've read you can have it without even knowing I began to worry.  She told me she had canker sores occasionally on her lips and I questioned her if they were cold sores and she promised that they wernt. Again no symptoms on my mouth or genitals but what are the chances I could have picked up herpes and never known over the past 2 years??

Thanks so much for the help!

The test I mentioned, IgG antibodies type specific for HSV1 and HSV2. This will give you pretty much all you can learn as you have no symptoms for discussion.

Ok thank you that helps. I have a doc app coming up soon. I will probably just talk then about it all. Any specific test I should ask for? With no symptoms of any kind?

I did know what the question was but was afraid of answering that in the sense that it is necessarily vague and may not help. The answer is quite unlikely but possible. It depends on a lot of factors including whether you already have HSV1.

Thanks for the response! I'm not sure how my question is that much different from others? I'm not asking for a diagnosis I know that can't be done! Let me simplify my question.

1. Can you have hsv1 or 2 for an extended period of time (1-2 years) with no symptoms (blisters, lesions, etc) and not know?

I don't think there is any value in speculating. If this is a need to know for you, seek the appropriate blood testing as a first step. This would be IgG antibodies type specific for HSV1 and HSV2.
