first off - topical acyclovir is of little use to help speed healing.  2nd of all it shouldn't be used inside the mouth or swallowed.  the prescribing info specifically says not to be used inside the mouth or nose.

acyclovir is an antiviral. it doesn't help with fungal infections. Whatever caused your thrush on your tongue to go away, it wasn't the acyclovir.

odds are this isn't hsv1 orally going on anyways to be honest. if you tested + for hsv1 previously, a recurrence won't cause these symptoms. Many other viruses out there and many other issues can also cause issues like this.

if you continue to have mouth issues like this and fungus isn't an issue for them, be sure to look into things like allergies including wheat/gluten allergies and also the chewing gums and toothpastes you use.

Hi Grace,

I was told by my doctor to put the zovirax on the sores in my mouth even though it is meant for external use.  Using the acyclovir got rid of the thrush on my tongue.  Most of the sore on the inner cheek is gone.  Its strange but I was told that a long time ago that I had HVS-1, but I have never had any break outs.  I was also told that HVS-1 is very common. I hope this stuff goes away pretty soon and I do not have any other out breaks.

it would've been most helpful for them to have done a lesion culture of your symptoms in your mouth :(

don't put the zovirax on your mouth!!!!  It's only for use on external cold sores. if you are tasting it, you are applying it wrongly!!!

You also were given the shingles dose of acyclovir which was the wrong dose.

be sure monday to have the doctor scrape your mouth to see if it's still thrush there that needs further treatment. it can be a booger to get rid of :(

Hi Grace,

I was so scared that I did not really focus on the paper work listing the test for herpes that my doctor ordered.  All, I know is that I took the paperwork to Quest Diagnostics and the person took blood draws. I have an appointment on Monday with my doctor to go over the results.  At the time of my doctor's visit all I could think about is that I have HIV and was scared. In the mean time my doctor prescribed acyclovir 800mg to be take one table 5 times a day. I also got zovirax ointment to put on the mouth ulcer 3 times a day and this stuff is really bitter. In addition, before I saw my general physician, I was given nystatin oral suspension by an ER doctor and he told to me to use it 4 times a day for 7 days.  I did, but the thrush is still there. I been told that oral thrush on the tongue causes bad breath, but to be honest with you I do not have bad breath.  I am very aware of bad breath as I am not a big fan of it.

I saw a doctor and he thinks it might be herpes and have done several test. Should get the results Monday.  I am thinking it could be HIV..Scare. I had unprotected vaginal sex.  A week later, I develop a the uclers on both cheeks. Then a week later the the thrush followed by the sore throat. However the sore throat doesn't hurt. It been about 3 week now and the uclers, sore throat and thrust have not gone away. Is ARS symptoms occurs like this or does all the symptoms occur at the same time as oppose in stages.

it's far more likely to be something else going on.

have you been seen and properly evaluated?
