Herpes Whitlow

Quick question, can herpes whitlow show up on your hands as a papercut or a clusters of papercut like cuts?

Lately I have been having a lot of papercuts near my hand and fingers. Usually leaving a mark but never any blisters or pimples on the hand. I noticed this while washing my hand with one a few times. I have a picture too that I took of it.

I got tested 4.5 months from my encounter at a planned parenthood facility. I tested for HIV Finger Prick Rapid Test, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and chlamydia  The results were all negative. I'm gonna take Dr Hook's advice on Herpes and not bother testing as I will probably be negative. I haven't had any symptoms either in the genitals ever since. So it could be possible that it's anxiety/stress induced.

Hi Grace,

1/26/2013
I have not since I haven't had any visible symtoms until today. I got one single pimple above my penis in my public area. Its only slightly itchy. Is this just a concidence and all in my mind? The slightly mild needle like pain/ tingling died down now. The pimples and genital discomfort has never happened to me before.
This happened before a few weeks after my encounter and I went to the primary care doctor and he said this is just acne pimples. It is normal. And it appears the pimple today is the same thing as last time.

Does this sound at all like hsv2 herpes? Even a mild case of one?
I am HSV1 Oral Positive from my childhood. Just trying to understand what is happening to me. I shouldn't need to worry about auto innocation at this point anyways right? Since its already been 3 months. IF I had it.

Thanks again Grace! :)

have you been seen yet for your newest symptoms?

really, no reason to think you have contracted hsv2 orally!!!!

Hi everybody, I am not sure if I am supposed to make a new post or continue on to the same one, after talking to you all and dr hook (see post)
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV---Prevention/Do-I-have-an-HIV-risk/show/1863491

He concluded that I was not at risk for any STD. So I felt confident and never got tested.

After reading Dr Hooks post, I was wondering if I was at risk from getting Oral HSV2 transfering to my mouth by kissing?? Or also the girls touching their genital outbreaks and then touching my mouth? I realize its rare but I feel so suspicious about it.

Couple weeks after my encounter, I ended up getting a lot of acne like pimples under my chin, and my entire body kept itching, including my eye so I ended up rubing my eye & I ended up getting pink eye that took a while for to disappear. Both eyes were red, but my left eye was more red. Afterwards my eye ended up getting dandruff like dust and dry eyes.
I was worried that those sudden pimples were my first outbreak and I may have infected my eye.

As of two days ago, 1/21/2013, I started getting tingling in my finger,
and genital area, headache and diaherrea, sore throat but so far no outbreaks yet. Thoughts and opinions? I am worried during the 3 month period, I might have autoinnocated myself on my finger (papercut), eye (from rubbing) and genital (self masterbation).

I know Oral HSV2 is rare and if this is anxiety based, I will get tested and put an end to the endless stress. Thanks again everybody!

Castello80, I hope you know I am extremely grateful for this website and your advice. You and grace have been extremely helpful beyond recognition.

I was concerned about autoculnation into other areas because I was scared I might have contracted hsv2 (possibly orally) and I recently got a cut on my hand from work and then touching my face. I have never had an outbreak of any kind, but from what you guys are telling me, self infection is only possible during an olbvious outbreak and the fact that you say that this is extremely rare helps me too. The more I think about it, it is highly unlikely I even have hsv2.

I understand what you guys are saying for testing at the two/three month mark and it is completely reasonable. I guess  i will wait for the 3 months mark to save money and stress.

Autinoculnation is extremely rare and if it is to happen, it's going to happen on your first outbreak not recurrences. Your body has built up antibodies to prevent it from spreading to other parts of your body, so no need to worry.

Close to all people test positive at three months, true. However, many people test positive after 2 months as well as a month after exposure. Three is not a magic number at all, but it is advised for you to wait three months ONLY to save money and ensure that your infection is or isn't there. For instance, if you wanted to, you could walk in a a couple months after if you desired to and get tested and it's likely it'll show up. I suggest seeking advice from the STD experts (Dr. Handsfield and Dr. Hook) regarding the general rule on how long it takes to show up in a test.

herpes igg blood testing isn't accurate until 3 months post encounter. don't retest at the 2 month mark - wait the extra month so you don't keep adding to your anxiety like this and paying for multiple tests needlessly.

Yes I have been tested for HSV-1 positive, but had never had an outbreak. but i'm afraid I have been tested too early to tell if it was hsv2, well I was suspcious it could have been hsv2 orally and then might have self infected myself to the hands, but I will get re-rested again this friday at the (2 month mark) to be safe.

That is so strange I been getting strange cuts on my hand overnight but that's fine by me because it's a huge relief to hear that it isn't whitlow. I was getting worried because an while back, I accidently made a cut on my hand at work a while back and might have got my hand infected by touching my face while the virus was silently shredding (but i'm sure this is all my imagination) The paperlike cuts are only itchy but no pain and they appear to heal back nicely.

Thank you grace on the suggestion, I will look into it & into a dermatologist.

this doesn't sound at all like herpes whitlow going on. whitlow hurts like a s.o.b.

most likely you just have dry skin. plenty of info online about how to deal with dry hands and if trying some of those ideas doesn't help, seek out the advice of a dermatologist.  sometimes it's actually from allergies/sensitivities to ingredients in soaps and hand sanitizers too which is why a dermatologist can be helpful if the typical advice doesn't work.

It doesn't sound like whitlow if they just appeared overnight and were already split open or cuts. Have you been tested for HSV-1? If you have it, no worries because 57-80% of the U.S. population are carriers.

In almost all cases, herpes whitlow is acquired during a primary outbreak of HSV-1 or HSV-2 by autoinoculnation, which means you touch a herpes lesion and it spreads to your fingers. The reason it spreads to your fingers is because it's a primary outbreak and your body hasn't had time to develop antibodies to prevent the infection from spreading to other places of the body. Dentists sometimes get this if they have no prior HSV-1 infection since their work involves the mouth. Have you experienced a cold sore recently?

To conclude, it doesn't sound like whitlow, but it still wouldn't be a bad idea to get checked to see if you have HSV-1 for your own knowledge. If you have it, the good news is you'll be immune from catching it in other locations of your body.

The reason why I am asking is because I have a group of papercuts near my thumb that are really close to each other. I thought that was a bit odd that I would get three seperate cuts all close to each other overnight.

Thank you for the fast response, so what your basically saying is all the paper-like cuts I been getting on my hand is just definitely just my mind being paranoid. Since its logical to conclude that herpe whitlow shows up as blisters first, not papercut's first.

Typically, herpes whitlow shows up as a cluster of lesions or blisters that eventually burst. They don't normally begin as cuts, but can resemble cuts after the lesions burst.
