Herpes testing window

Was with a woman and now have possible herpes 2 symptoms.

She was tested before being with me and was negative. Only problem was she had unprotected sex with someone 26 days before that test. I know 12 weeks is recommended window, but how many people might show positive within 26 days (percent)?

What percent of people in US have herpes 2?

What percent have it but are totally unaware/asymptomatic?

Also, how common is it to get in one or two encounters?

How long would one expect first symptoms to last?

Can you get a swab test if there's no obvious open sore but just a rash?

Do you commonly get it first on the part of the body that touched infected part? What parts of body are most susceptible?

I haven't tested yet because I am only five weeks after my potential exposure.

If you tested for herpes and are negative then this should end your concern. Other issues have other forums to post in.

I happen to have a doctor giving me a physical at this time for largely unrelated reasons.

Blood work all came back fine except trace of red blood cells in urine. Any connection with hsv2?

After reading the anxiety-reducing posts above, and feeling better as a result, I just read several posts from Dr. Hook talking about hsv2 infections on stomach, butt, and thighs, saying they were "not uncommon," and on chest, which he said were less common but still "not surprising."

That caught me off guard.

How "not uncommon" is that?

The woman WAS grinding her vagina on my thigh for an extended period of time, trying to get off.

Many things cause rashes that are far more likely a cause than herpes. Continue to follow up with dermatologists for any new symptoms.

Obviously anxiety, guilt, and shame trigger all the concern. It's probably hard to understand from outside, even if you see it all the time here.,

But of course there's also an unexplained rash, plus my own GF had a rash on her butt too (after).  So one begins to connect dots, perhaps wrongly.

But also there is some conflicting information. Some people do apparently get hsv2 from non-genital contact, though it's probably very rare. Then you wonder just how far she slid her wet vagina down your thigh-even if you never had sex, were you ever too close? And what about brief hand to genital to hand contact? And what if my penis just brushed some hsv2 area if hers I was unaware of which we laid together naked and made out, rolling around and laying on top of one another? These are why the questions about testing windows and concerns about her status and percentages of transmission arise, as crazy as it may all seem.

Thanks again for reading and for your level-headed replies and rational information.

Fleet wood, I truly appreciate your words, even if it must be tedious to you.

Thanks a million times over.

It is not relevant what your partner's HSV2 status is. You did not have an exposure of any practical chance of infection. You have no reason to suspect there is HSV2 at play anywhere.

Had doctor check rash twice and he's not sure.

Thinks it's not scabies. Didn't do a swab for herpes. Maybe because I was so focused on scabies after hearing my exposures as listed above were so low-risk for HSV2 that I led him away from that a bit or didn't fully explain the exposures (I got handed from one doc to next in two visits and may not have fully explained to second doc).

I am now four weeks and six days since second of two exposures, so presumably I can't get a meaningful test yet.

Other woman tested negative for hsv2 five weeks before being with me (feb 29-something). But beyond me and her hubby, she had one additional affair (I think a one time fling) on January 26, so that potential exposure was only 3.5 weeks before her negative test. This other guy did some tests before they got together (it was planned, I guess) but didn't test for herpes.

She's gonna get a test two days from now. That will be 14 weeks since her affair in January, so it should be a pretty definitive test.

Any thoughts? Any words to talk me down out if my anxiety?

Fleetwood, thanks. Much appreciated.

Your words and those of Grace and Life above have made me less concerned about hsv2 now. I get it, it seems impossible or exceptionally low-risk.

I am now more worried about scabies, which seems a possible answer.

The thigh has extremely thick skin. Highly unlikely this is an entry site for a herpes infection. Dripping fluids no practical risk at all.

Fleet wood, I will have rash checked, I promise, thanks.

My main concern is that she rubbed her wet vagina for an extended time on my thigh-we were trying to get her off without intercourse.

Some of her fluids could have dripped down my leg to behind my scrotum-seems unlikely, huh? And I was on top if her grinding leg into same area, but doubt that there was any accidental genital contact or, if so, only fleeting,

Well with  that information we can tell you that you had zero risk of infection from that particular episode. You should have the rash evaluated as mentioned.

Just trying to bump this to the top in hopes of getting some final opinions after the initial very helpful information.

I will get the rash inspected and will get tested when I get my window.

Am I right though that my actual potential exposure was in the "possible but unlikely" mode due to lack of oral sex, intercourse, and genital contact, even if it did involve fingering her vagina, her rubbing my penis a bit, some potential for wet fingers touching my penis, her wet vagina grinding on my leg, and general body contact during hugging and rolling around?

And am I also right that the chances that her one contact before me that's not fully covered by her own recent test actually having hsv2 was only about fifty percent, and then there's a long series of decreased percentages based on if he was shedding, if she got it, if her test at 24 days missed it (think I have read it's about 50% at that point), if she was shedding, and if I got it from our low-risk behavior.

Finally, am I right that rashes on upper thighs behind scrotum, minus lesions that open, without big pain, in area that seems unlikely for direct contact with her, would not be considered typical?

Grace, what do you think?

Given exposure, is that truly a likely way to transmit herpes 2?

And are my breakdown of the odds accurate-meaning even if she did sleep with other guy within her testing window, it's unlikely to result in my having herpes 2?

And am I right that twin flat red half-moon shaped rashes on upper thighs behind scrotum that never seemingly escalate to an open wound and that never cause a great dal of pain or itchiness, coupled with occasional itchiness by anus and top of crack by back, are not especially typical physical symptoms for first occurrence of herpes 2 with physical symptoms?

Don't mean to rush you, and thanks for your time and consideration. You've both been a big help in helping me wrap my head around this and ease my anxiety.

Grace, thanks.

No protection but no oral sex and no intercourse either. I don't think we had direct genital contact either but if we did it was brief. Mutual masturbation, lots of rolling around naked and touching.

My rash is primarily on back/top of thighs and around anus. Hard to quite imagine touching her a lot with those parts of my body but it's possible I guess.

I get your point about percentage, but if you could indulge me I think it would actually reduce my anxiety.

My rash has been around for ten days or so-too late for swab?

If you had a rash, you should be seen and get it properly evaluated. If a medical professional suspects your rash is due to herpes, they can swab it. This testing is best when done sooner rather than later.

The odds that you contracted genital herpes from a one time encounter are fairly low but not zero. Don't obsess over the percentages, they really aren't all that helpful in determining risk for testing.

Was this a protected sexual encounter?

So is all this basically true?

Other guy could have had herpes 2 but might not have. Chances are maybe 20-50% he did.

He would have had to be shedding to give it to her. Chances 15%.

Even if so, no guarantee she got it. In brief affair, one day or weekend with sex once or a few times, chances are probably nowhere near 50% but we'll go with that.

Chances that her blood test at 24 days missed a new infection is about 50%.

Chances she was shedding while with me only about 15%.

Chances I picked it up in two episodes, neither involving penetration, quite small-probably nowhere near 10%.

Sound right?

Does the swab test work on a rash or do you need an open sore/lesion? Anything else to know about swab tests?

Hsv2 shed about 15% of the time

I trust her test, minus that incident 26 days earlier.

If she did get it then, and was asymptomatic but newly infected, dies she shed more/is she more likely to pass the infection?
