long time since I've read that post!

I know phase 2 was 40%. not sure I ever read phase 1.

At this point all we can do is wait for them to publish results. it was a HUGE study so it should give us the final answer for once and for all on this vaccine that has been in production for over 15 years now.

thanks for the news grace, albeit disappointing.

one other clarification, if you don't mind.  you had reported that the vaccine was about 40% successful (for hsv-1 negative women).  I have read in several places that it was more like 70-75% successful (http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Western-Blot-accuracy-when-vaccinated/show/249132).  Is this difference the difference between results from phase I and phase II and phase III trials?

doubt it'll get released anywhere else sooner either to be honest.

they haven't even released any of the phase 3 study details yet and then it'll be a few years after that if the FDA approves it as being effective enough to market.

this info is all available on pubmed.gov in various studies.

The study is complete it's just that it takes awhile to evaluate all the results from a study that took several years to finish and took place in multiple clinics throughout the world.

yes indeed it has only been effective in totally hsv negative females.  In phase 2 trials, it reduced infection with the virus by 40%.

It is ineffective for reducing ob's in folks already infected with hsv2 or for eliminating the virus.

This is actually a vaccine that they've had in development for many , many years now. Initially they thought it was completely ineffective until they looked at the data more closely and realized that in completely naive  hsv females, it did show some effectiveness.

it's not an ideal vaccine by no means but at this point, it's the best we have.  Infected males taking daily suppressive therapy with valtrex reduces transmission to a partner by 48% ( actually more if you remember to actually take it every single day ).

it's my understanding that this vaccine is for women only and would (theoretically) prevent the hsv-2 virus from taking root if they were exposed.  would this destroy the hsv-2 virus in women that already have it?  or just prevent uninfected women from getting it?

either way, i hope the trials go well.  if they can come up with a vaccine for women, i'm sure one for men isn't too far beyond the horizon as well.
