How long do the outbreaks last?

Please help...  My wife just got vaginal herpes and we got the medication a few days ago.  It is agonizing to see he apply the medication.  My question is how long does the fist outbreak last before the pain subsides?

Thank you

I'm sorry to here you have to go through this.  I just found out I have genital hsv1.  My husband seems to be there for me but it is hard to deal none the less.  I wore loose pants, cotton panties.  I dried the area with a blow dryer and took plenty of advil.  When not at work I tried to sit or semi lay to relieve any pressure in the area.  Everyone is so different, from pain tolerance to severity of outbreak.  Warm baths were suggested.  Hope you feel better soon.

I'm kinda curious as to what medication was she given to 'apply' on the sores. I asked my Dr. about a cream or something and he said there's no topical medicine for genital herpes.
In my personal experience which is almost none at all, the outbreaks are taking about 1 week to 10 days to heal over but only about 3-4 days of painful open sores (note that I am taking Valtrex to speed up the healing process). But I don't know if that's the average or not. I guess it also depends on how many sores she has and at what stage they are, and also the location of them. If they get constant rubbing with clothing they will hurt and take longer to heal. She could try going pantyless with a skirt for a few days and see if that helps.
