Incubation and transmission

I had one-night-stand unprotected sex on Saturday night (10 days ago), and then had sex with my wife on Monday & Tuesday night. On Tuesday I noticed a very small pimple beside my scrotum, it went away after 1 or 2 days and then another developped on Wednesday or Thursday on my scrotum in the skin fold at the base of my penis. I only noticed them because they were slightly more tender than most pimples. I didn't think much of it until Saturday when my wife showed me a similar pimple on her outer labia. She said the pimple was quite sore and she had noticed a slight sensation in her outer groin since Thursday, before the pimple developed. Since Saturday she's developed 1 or 2 more of these pimples a few inches away from her vagina. The pimples have a whitish head but don't look fluid filled or ready to burst. They are individuals and not in groups. Mine seems to be going away now (after almost a week) fading without bursting. My doc took a quick look at my pimple and said he thought it was nothing and way too fast to develop and transmit Herpes and gave me antibiotics and cream for us both to treat a skin infection. I'm still wondering if it's possible. I'm thinking it would be possible for me to catch it but unlikely I could transmit it to my wife and that she would also show symtoms that quick. What do you think?

it's actually far more common than most folks suspect.

next time you have symptoms, be seen within 48 hours for a lesion culture. you can even ask your provider about having the supplies at home to do a pcr swab yourself ( not sure how lucky you'll get with that in canada ).

Well I gotta say it sure looks and feels like H, the prodrome tingling, and the way it looks (although I only get a few blisters in a very small area), no pain though except when it heals over and I happen to stretch the skin.

But I'm still curious about where this came from, so back to my question, and hey I'm just wondering what your opinion is and I already know there's no cut and dry answer. It must be extremely unlikely I could carry the virus for over a year without a sign and then have a two-month initial breakout followed by regular ones every 6-8 weeks since then (15 months)........have you ever heard of this happenning to anyone?

still a risk for a false positive so it really needs to be confirmed.  Much easier to get a lesion culture with your next symptoms than to go and get wb's done.

I live in a small town myself. Got over it all a long time ago. My having an acyclovir prescription wouldn't be anywhere near as exciting as the stuff folks just assume is happening in your life ;)

The test result was 3.4 or thereabouts, that STDWeb has a pretty simplified results sheet, but it was over three. I'm thinking I will take a ride back across the border next month and get a WB for me and my wife.  Based on visual symptoms and how it behaves, I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I have H.

No cultures yet, I actually had to argue with my doc that these tests were even possible. He keeps telling me no accurate blood tests exist. I really don't want have them done in my hometown anyways, I won't even buy Valtrex in town! Small towns, you know how it is.

what was your hsv2 igg result this time?

have either of you yet to have + lesion cultures for herpes? those are easily obtained in canada.

In your experienced opinion, how likely would it be that I could have carried this for years with no symptoms, then out of the blue had an outbreak (that lasted almost 2 months) three days after my only unprotected sexual encounter in 5 years, my wife have an outbreak a couple of days later (lasted two weeks and she had enlarged glands and all), and for the next year+ I had regular outbreaks? I'm guessing the odds of this are very very low?

Here's another update to this story just to show how complicated Herpes can be. I've had fairly regular outbreaks since my first one in March 2011 (every six weeks maybe), my wife not so much but she stil had a few, they still look exactly the same since day 1 too. We both get prodrome before the outbreaks. So this past May, when I went back to the US, I went in for another Herpeselect test, and I was positive for type 2! So five months after my initial OB I was negative but then 14 months after I was positive. My wife never bothered with the tests, scared of needles and confident my test from last August was accurate. But five whole months and my antibodies were damn near zero, actually 0.2 I believe!

The girl who gave it to me got tested (God knows what kind of test) and her Doc said she was negative. But I never even got naked with anyone else for a over year before we were together, my symptoms started three days after we were together, and they have been consistent ever since. There's really nowhere else I could have got this. Sadly she's having a really rough time these days and I just haven't been able to tell her, I'm afraid it will push her over the edge.

you'd both need to be seen when you have active symptoms at this point and if they suspect herpes, lesion cultures can be done.

Just thought I would update this post. During the first outbreak back on March/April I had blisters for over a month. They finally went away when I did a course of Valtrex. There's no blood testing where I live in Canada.

Anyways in August I went for a short vacation to the US and booked a blood test. The results came back negative for both HSV 1+2. Last month both my wife and I had another outbreak, again one within days of the other, her first and me 2 days later. It passed quite quickly this time around, but now, a month later I just noticed a few more little blisters. If it isn't Herpes I don't know what it could be.......

it's 1/3 of the time a visual diagnosis is wrong. the CDC recommends follow up testing to confirm every single visual diagnosis of herpes. The visual diagnosis is terrific for starting treatment but it needs confirmed as well as typed with further testing.

you really need to be seen and get these looked at. they sound like something non-herpes going on and they need proper treatment.

Well it's been a couple of weeks since my first signs, and I'm away in a foreign country now and can't get tested. My pimple developed into several pimples/blisters which were damp for a few days and started to heal. The healing was going well and then yesterday I started to feel a slight burning in that general area, I would look closely and everything seemed unchanged, so I couldn't figure out why it was burning like that. I also felt a slight sensation when urinating which I didn't have before. So this morning I wake up and there's 5 or 6 new little blisters ajacent to the older ones. Is this consistent with a first herpes outbreak? My "aquaintance" got bloodwork done yesterday so that might answer some questions when the results come back.

Also, I've been wondering, I believe I read here that a HSV2 visual diagnosis is only correct 1/3 of the time? What then do the people have in the other 2/3 of cases where a doctor assumed it was herpes without testing?

I'm not too concerned about other STD's at this point. The girl was an aquaintance and we've been talking since and she's going to go for bloodwork. Hopefully she comes out negative. She insists she is completely healthy and hadn't had sex in months, but I don't think she realizes how many people have Herpes without knowing it. Meanwhile my spot hasn't gone away and the area around the original pimple is slightly red. Not a good sign for sure.

actually that was the average amount of time it takes until herpes appears.

at this point, your wife needs to go and be seen and get looked at too since it sounds like she still has active symptoms.

since you had unprotected sex, you can get tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea anytime after 1 week post encounter. syphilis anytime after 6 weeks. herpes and hiv anytime after 3 months to cover your bases.
