Is this Herpes?

Hi all, need some help.  I dated a girl for 2.5 months and found out she has genital HSV1. We had sex about 10-15 times during this time, some with protection and some without.  The last time was in January of this year 2009.  Since August, my front groin, inner thigh and buttocks area started to itch and rashes started to appear everywhere below the waist but nothing on my penis.  The rash is finally starting to clear up now (October) but I occassionally have noticed bruises/lesion on my thigh. I have 3 of them right now.  I am starting to notice cluster of white blister on my upperlip, it does not tingle or itch as of yet but can this be HSV?  I don't recall having an outbreak of any sort until all the symptoms in August.  Will I end up getting HSV2 since I know I never been exposed to HSV1 before and never been sexually active in the past?  I have been to the doctor and recently dermatologist and they do not think its herpes.  I got tested for syphillis and it was negative.  I did have one genital wart on my scrotum that I got burned off.  This just doesn't make sense as I started getting all the herpes symptoms since sleeping with this female.  I occassionally take oral acyclovir everytime i notice something weird.  So will taking this anti-viral pills cause me to not have a real primary outbreak?  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

the doctor erred in saying it was a recent infection due to the + igm. igm herpes testing is inaccurate and current cdc guidelines recommend it not be used on adults to diagnose herpes.

honestly these folks are wasting your time. a lesion culture of active symptoms should've been done at this point if they suspected herpes. there is no need for more herpes blood testing for you as I previously recommended.

nothing you've mentioned warrants an infectious disease consult. you'd be wasting your time with them too. A dermatologist and an orthopedic specialist would be more appropriate consults.

Hi Grace, I am back and want to report something to you.  So back when I ask this question, I have been tested for HSV at least 6 times in 3 years all with the Herpes Select IGG test all from the same doctor and Quest lab, all results came back negative.

So recently over Thanksgiving Break 2011,  I had  blister that broke out (but didnt hurt) in between my upper lip and below my nose, but not on the lip.  I took a picture and went to a different doctor (internalist instead of my family general doctor who did all the previous testing) and show him the pic, he said it looks like herpes but will run a test.

So the test came back and here are the results

IGM = 1.24
IGG for I = .07
IGG for II = .14

So he say that i have oral herpes and it was a recent infection.  The problem is I have not dated anyone since 2009 cause i want to know if I have it or not.

What do you think?  Do i have herpes or not?  I am getting refer to an Infectious Disease specialist as a follow up since a lot of things has been happening to my body since the possible exposure in 2009. Vitamin D deficiency, Had bone spur surgery in ankle this summer and now have denegenerative disc disease in my neck along with frequent skin rashes over the past 3 years.

Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks for response Grace, well those two ulcers now have bursted.  I have this huge scar on my chin right now that is pink.  The other one is on my right cheek, small but noticeable.  Do you still think its not herpes?  I am having surgery tomorrow, do you think I am having any outbreak? What will surgery?  Also I notice my genital wart has come back...Should I cancel my surgery, I am getting circumcise.

you need to follow up on symptoms when you have them.  get your symptoms looked at and lesion cultures would be more helpful than blood tests at this point but the odds of this being herpes related is low.

honestly, herpes is not the cause of everything.

Hi Grace,

I'm back and just need more clarification...It's been almost a year since my IGG test, the results were both negative.  However, I still do not feel it's accurate.  Today my body feels worn down and I notice a bump below my chin that busted into liquid and also one to the side of my mouth.  Both have bursted so now I think its healing.  They don't hurt or anything but I am wondering if it can be herpes?  I haven't slept with anyone since the last girl that I thought I got it from (Crazy I know but I just want to be sure if I got it or not).  Would another test now be able to tell I have herpes or not?  It's almost a year since my last test.  It's just strange that I would get these small ulceration without any causes.  What do you think?

I am having an IGG test done. I went today so I should know something by Tuesday.  I know that even a + hsv1 could be meaningless but I never been active before so that's what worries me.  Something is definitely not right.  So will i end up catching HSV2, if i have never been exposed to HSV1?

what testing did you have done - igg or igm?

really at this point it sounds like you've worked yourself up way too much over this. Even a + hsv1 igg is meaning less since you don't know if it's oral or genital. You'd need a lesion culture of fresh genital lesions to confirm hsv1 genitally.

Thanks Grace, is there a difference in blood test igm vs. igg?  I had to call my doctor to make sure it is an igg test since "needhelp27" recommended it.  My doctor was telling me that at first the lab he ships it to doesnt offer but finally found that it does.  Should I go with another doctor?

Anyway, I know I am being paranoid but I just want to know. Why do you think I don't have it?  Does all herpes symptoms have to be painful?

Thanks all...I went to doctor today and finally convinced the doctor to do a blood test on me so I will know the results next week.  I know blood test is not accurate and only a culture test can decide but I just want to know.

I know it doesn't sound like herpes, but like I said before I've never been sexually active so this is giving me some anxiety issue.  Is it possible that since I take the aclyovir every now and then, it has not cause me to have a huge breakout?  So what does taking the pills do if you I don't have herpes?  Will it cause the blood test to be false?

Thanks!

this doesn't sound at all like herpes.

The providers you've seen don't think it's herpes either.

hsv1 genitally doesn't shed very often so the odds of it being transmitted genitally are very low.  don't get caught up in thinking this has to be a std just because a former partner was honest and told you that they had one.

I'm no expert here but I think you should test for HSV 1 and 2 and get the igg..if your doc orders igm its useless.  Good luck!

Will a blood test reveal anything since it's been 9 months?
