Will I Need To Have A Caesarean Section If I Have Genital Herpes?

If you have genital herpes, it does not mean that you automatically need a caesarean section. However a caesarean may become your best option if you have active genital herpes prior to the birth.

If the herpes virus is not active, then a vaginal birth is perfectly fine – you will be treated like any other low risk woman. In the weeks leading up to the birth, your doctor may prescribe medication to prevent an outbreak of herpes, in which case you have the all clear and peace of mind to birth whatever way you please.

( march of dimes. Sorry it didnt post the rest for some reason. Didnt mean to be so aggressive on this)

Genital Herpes In Pregnancy

If you or your partner have ever been diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus, you must tell your healthcare provider at your first appointment. If you caught the infection pre-pregnancy, it is likely that your immune system will protect your baby during pregnancy. If a previously diagnosed herpes infection flares up during pregnancy, this should not affect your baby.

If you contact genital herpes for the first time during the first trimester, there is a slight possibility that the baby will be infected via the placenta. If this is the case, there is an increased risk of miscarriage. There is also a slightly increased risk that your baby will develop birth defects in the womb.

If you contract the infection during the last six weeks of pregnancy, your immune system will not have time to produce antibodies to protect the baby. If the baby has not received protection via your immune system, there is a chance that the virus could be transmitted during the birth.

Pregnant women with genital herpes should be careful about passing the virus on to the baby, but not overly worried about it.

A mother can infect her baby during delivery, often fatally. But if a woman had genital herpes before getting pregnant, or if she is first infected early in pregnancy, the chance that her baby will be infected is very low -- less than 1%. Women with genital herpes are examined carefully for any symptoms beforegiving birth. If sores or signs that an outbreak is coming show up at the time of delivery, the baby may be delivered bycesarean section (also called a C-section).

The risk of infecting the baby is high (30% to 50%) when a woman is newly infected late in pregnancy, however. That's because the mother's immune system has not developed protective antibodies against the virus. Women with an older herpes infection have antibodies against the virus, which help protect the baby. If you are pregnant and think you may have been infected recently, tell your doctor right away.

To disagree is fine. No offense what taken. I my self had a c section due to complications with my twins. But after having 3 different drs tell me that WITH the aid of antiviral medications prior to child birth and if there are no visible sores blisters it is safe to deliver vaginal. Anti corals reduce the risk of it passing on according to what these drs have said. The choice is up to the mother always on the way she wants to deliver her child.

I respectfully disagree with tattoomommy03. People get herpes all the time from their partner and the partner does not show any visible blisters or sores.  This is your baby's health. I would not risk it if I were in your shoes.

Hi there. Congrats on the pregnancy! I myself am pregnant and have herpes. A vaginal delivery is safe as long as there are no visible blisters or sores at the time of delivery. Antiviral medication is ok to take while pregnant. I take them as well with my drs ok. They also help protect the baby because it gets in their system. If yi u want to email please feel free. Or you can find me in the maternity ward group.

You may want to look into having a c section so you will not expose your child to the disease. My understanding is that the child will have to come into contact with the infected skin.  Speak to your doctor about decreasing the meds. He or she may have you on them for a reason.
