Oral hsv 2 from kissing
Hi Terri, Here's what seems to be an actual case of oral hsv 2 from kissing. I've been tested many times and always come up Hsv 1 pos. and neg. for hsv 2. I'm certain I was neg. for Hsv 2. prior to this encounter. Anyway, went on a blind date. things went decent and completely out of character kissed her goodbye in the parking lot. Semi deep and intimate kiss lasting 20 seconds or so. Well sure enough exactly 7 days later noticed a cold sore. I've gotten cold sores my whole life. But this one was in a completetly different area of my mouth and lips. I assume this is a new HSV 2 infection. Seems pretty far fetched that I would have a outbreak of my established hsv 1 right after this encounter. Haven't had an outbreak in over 2 years and never in this area. The outbreak was pretty mild. I would think that a primary outbreak would be somewhat worse than my typical ones. I'm certainly freaking out. I actualy did go to my Doctor. But by that time. It was too late to get an culture because it had crusted over. The cold sore did heal very quickly. So at this point I'm pretty sure I'm the exception to the rule. I know for a fact that I was Hsv 2 neg. with no contact for 2 years. before this kiss. I guess I actually kissed her during the3 days this year she was shedding or she had just been infected herself. So I guess I just have to wait 12-16 weeks and hopefully get a neg hsv 2 result. Though like I said. I'm pretty sure I now have Oral HSV 2 from kissing. Maybe the first documented case. If I get another cold sore I'll certainly get it cultured. What do you think.Are most primary HSV 2 oral infections mild or should I have been showing more symptoms. Are oral hsv 2 infections from kissing really that rare? Since I'm hsv 1 positive will it take longer to seroconvert? Can you get another hsv 1 infection of a different strain orally

Yes, My numbers on the research i cite are skewed. I definitely need to recheck before I reference something. The thread comes from Dr. Handsfield in the STD forum called Oral HSV2 questions from Jan.9 2009. It's a trial where they swabbed 50 men with both oral and genital HSV2 every day for 2 months. Where they found asymptomatic shedding in 2.3% of the swabs. He also says that in he's 30+ years in the field he hasn't seen a documented case of oral HSV2 from kissing. I'm starting to think i'm being ridiculous about this whole thing. I just need to convince my obsessed mind of that. I wouldn't have even had a second though about this. If i hadn't had an outbreak 7 days after contact. So, I'll take your advice and consider it very unlikely that i acquired HSV2 orally. I suppose it's up to me if I want to test at 3-4 months. I did talk to the lady that i kissed and she does have a history of cold sores and might be willing to test. She has never tested before. But i'm not sure i should push the issue considering she could very well come up HSV2 pos. And it wouldn't really tell us anything about location. Though would make her deal with having HSV2. Probable not fair to her. Anyway, Thank you for your time. You definitely seem to be the leading authority on this issue. I guess i wanted to hear you say it was impossible for me to get HSV2 this way. I suppose i'll take it as improbable and try and move on.

What you read about the virus residing on one side of the body only is an error, completely.
And I am interested in the research study that you cite that indicates HSV 2 is shed from the mouth on 5% of days.
If you were my patient, I would tell you exactly what I have told you here.

Oops, On my last message. I meant to say that this outbreak is on the lower corner of my left lip. and that all other outbreaks have been on the upper right lip. Which would be from a different ganglia. This ordeal is definitely starting to wear on me. Now i'm raking my brain wondering if I had possibly somehow autinoculated myself in other areas before or during this outbreak. through going to the bathroom and or taking a bath. I just wish i would have forced the issue with my Doc. to do the culture even though he thought it was too late. I'm sure as i wait for months to take the igg test i'll now manifest all kinds of symptoms all over my body. I definitely have a obsessive personallity. Anyway thanks for your services

Thanks for the response. The main reason i suspect this as being a new oral hsv 2 infection is that it perfectly fits the incubation period for a new infetion. 2-20 days after exposer. doesn't that make it pretty suspect.
Also I thought that estabilished infections in the oral area are cofined to the ganglia on just one side of the face. This outbreak is on the lower corner of my right lip. where as all my other outbreaks are on the upper right lip. Either way. it just seems way to coincidental that after this encounter. I would get a cold sore from my old established hsv 1 infection 7 days later. As for someone only shedding 1% of days orally. I've read a swab trial on medhelp where after swabbing the mouth area for an extended time. it was found that the area was actually shedding more like 5% of days. So either way I'm sure it's feasible that someone could pass it on during this days of shedding, Though i'm not sure if the infection is likely to take hold. If someone has hsv1 orally. What is the dogma on this. Can the body fight off an exposer if it already has hsv 1. Or would the hsv 2 virus not set up shop just cause it doesn't like the oral area. I realize there are no conclusive answers. I guess i'm wondering how you would handle this circumstance if it came into your clinic. Would you recommend further testing. or just consider it a no risk encounter even though there was visual symptoms 7 days after exposer. Also. what about some of my questions from the first message. I'm not sure why you think you have HSV 2. Is it because the cold sore came up in a different location than you usually get them? It is completely normal for the cold sore virus to move around from place to place on the mouth. This may not have happened to you before and that may be why you are wondering if you have HSV 2? The cold sore virus can show up anywhere on your mouth, in your nose on your chin, or even around the eye. This is all very normal and expected.
Also, since HSV 2 orally rarely recurs clinically and sheds on only 3 days of the year if someone has it, it would be very unlikely for you to acquire this orally as well.
