Other way you might get herpes

Hi, My wife and I have been married for 9 years and known each other for a couple more (since she was 18 and I 20), we never had any other sexual partners before or after marriage.  last week wife got a rash on here inner thigh went to check it out and her doctor (skin doctor) told her it was herpes who only visually examined her, no blood test or any other  We have been married for 9 year and Neither of us had any other sexual partners before or after marriage I trust her blindly and sure that she never cheated, I know I haven't, that why we never tested for STDs.  She went again to the doctor who insisted that it was herpes and agreed to do blood tests! Waiting for results - although he told her that they might come out negative, but nevertheless he is convinced that it is herpes. She is a therapist working with disabled and elderly people. I sometimes get these cold sores inside my mouth, and I could have hsv1 but since researching the topic in not sure it is as these might be caused by other conditions. And that why we rarely indulge in oral sex. Could the doctor be mistaken? – if not could she have contracted it from one of her patients? Or any other way? Also, if she has hsv-2 as the doctor thinks and I do have hsv1, could she infect me during intimate relations? I heard that if I do have hsv1 then I cannot get hsv2 – is that accurate?  Thanks

Having hsv1 gives you no protection against hsv2.
The Dr did you a disservice by not swabbing the area and testing it for hsv. Even std experts can misdiagnose hsv by sight alone up to 50% of the time. Hsv2 igg blood tests are quite good as long as enough time has passed since contracting the virus. 12 weeks from exposure is the recommended time frame. Since you are confident she has been faithful then that should be a non issue.
A genital hsv infection is an std. Meaning only sexual contact will lead to contracting the virus. If she turns out to be hsv1 positive and you get cold sores then you can be confident you passed it to her via oral sex at some point. If she has hsv2 and you are negative for hsv2 then you will have to figure either she's had this since before you met (extremely unlikely as she was a virgin) or..
You should test as well so you both know. All that being said genital hsv should never be diagnosed by sight alone. There are many other things that present like herpes. If her blood tests are negative she shoukd retest in 8 weeks and if the rash and sores come back get them swabbed and type specific tested for hsv.
