Possible Primary HSV-1 infection?

Hello all. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am a 26 year old male and the other day I was out drinking and I may have kissed a girl. I do not think she had any visible sores on her lip. Four days later I developed a slight sore throat. It only bothers me when I am swallowing saliva, it does not hurt when I drink or eat, in fact it seems to feel better for a short period of time. I do not have a fever at all but I have notice a few lymph nodes on each side of my neck are swollen. Now 6 days later I still have a slight sore throat, slightly swollen lymph nodes, still no fever and no cold sore. Could these be symptoms of a primary infection? Your information is greatly appreciated?

Mistakeguy or Grace,

Sorry but I have one more question. I have noticed a small white spot right on the edge of my top lip. (About the size if not smaller than a pin head) I actually have one on both sides almost in the same spot, but the one on the left is a little more raised and has a bit more red around it. I noticed this spot for the first time this past Sunday 8-1. Now 8-5 the spot is still there and the same size. Is it possible that this is the start of a cold sore and it is just taking this long to develop? Or cold this be a primary cold sore that is really small?

Thanks and sorry again for another question.

Great! Thank you for you quick response. Your information is greatly appreciated! I somewhat agree that I am blowing this up to more that it really is. This girl was not a friend of mine, I just met her that night and have no way to contact her. But I do not even remember kisser her. (Very Drunk)  I think I was just paranoid from jump street. My sore throat is almost gone as of today which is 4 days after I noticed it and the night I did notice it was the first night we slept with the AC on and with the ceiling fan going. I still have no fever.

I think what scared me the most is that I read the majority of people do not get a cold sore at a primary outbreak and that they just get a sore throat, fever, and other similar symptoms. But, I am glad that you said that no one is completely asymptomatic. That is what I was searching for. Like you said "Most people get sick but write it off as something else". I just wanted to make sure that I was not one of those people. I would not have worried about it so much if it were not for my wife being 21 weeks pregnant.

Thanks again.

Grace is a volunteer so she doesn't get to questions all day long.  But if I can provide a tad bit of insight.

1.What are the most common symptoms of a oral herpes infection in adults?

Typically painful sores and a bad sore thorat.  Dr. HHH has said that it is typically the worse sore throat of your life.  A simple sore throat could be anything (you snoring at night, a cold, the house being to cold, etc).  Basically you would have a lot worse feelings then that.

2. Is fever one that is always paired with infection?

Typically yes.

3. Are they usually apparent without sores? Or are they usually asymptomatic?

No one is truly "asymptonmatic" they have symptoms they either don't know them or blow them off too something else. Sores are the typical outcome of someone infected with HSV.

4. I am going to make an appointment to see my doctor. Should he be able to tell if I am having a primary infection?

If they see the sores they may say yes it is HSV or they may not.  Visual diagnosis can be wrong up to 1/3 of the time even with the worlds top HSV experts.  They can culture anything that has been present for less then 48 hours for perfect response.

5. Would a IGM test be a good idea at this point? I know the IGM is not a very reliable test but it is too early for the IGG test.

I see in your last post you said you did it.  That was a waste of time and money.  If it comes back positive what will you know then?  Nothing.  IgM is a worthless test when it comes to adults and HSV.  If you click on my name and go to my journal entry you will see a long post that I did and links to articles by Dr. HHH (our STD Expert Forums Doctor).  If it comes back negative even then you won't truly know because what if at the point of the test the IgM response has lessened and now you are building IgG antibodies.

You simply won't know the answer. You said you kissed a friend... Have you asked this friend if you kissed and made out?  Does she even have cold sores/fever blisters or been tested?  At this point you may not have even kissed her and you are worrying yourself to death.  The other side to this is kissing is not always the best and easy way to transmit the virus.  Like grace said what you have going on could be so much more then HSV.

Continue to work with your doctors but I wouldn't worry about anything unless you get obvious sores and at that point I would see your doctor for a culture.

Grace,

Sorry to bother you. But could you please provide answers to my questions in my last post. Thank you very much.

Also since that post I did go and get a IGM Test done. I have read that they are not very reliable but it is the only shot I have at this point to protect my wife and baby. Am I correct in doing this?
If it does come back positive then I should refrain from kissing her correct?
How long after exposure does a person become infectious?

Grace thank you for your time in the matter. It is greatly appreciated! Hope to hear back from you soon.

Grace, thank you for your response. I am most worried because my wife is pregnant and I am worried about possible primary infection to her that might cause problems with the baby. Back in April I did have a ELISA specific IGG test done and both came back negative.
