Hi, with a recent infection you can have outbreaks on both sides but not with a recurrent outbreak, meaning an older infection. These might not be a herpes outbreak, well at least not one side.
1. hsv2 is contracted by direct genital to genital contact and has to be rubbed in. You can touch it but as a precaution do wash your hands. To get it in another area like the hands, you would have to get it at the same time as the genital. It just depends if your antibody levels are high enough to prevent it. But bottom line hsv2 is considered sexually transmitted as the hands skin is to thick as prefers soft moist areas like the mucus genital area.
