Questioning my doctor

I have been diagnosed today with a positive blood test. My initial outbreak (genital) began 10 days ago... 7 days prior I had unprotected sex. I'm a 35 yo female, divorcee, 5 yr old son...

Questions, since this has all occurred over the course of two weeks, I'm confused about the testing. I had a blood test, and Dr. called saying its positive, but they can't tell me from the "simple test she ordered" if it's HSV 1 or 2. I've also read that it can take 3 months to get the most accurate test (by stalking Grace's posts).

I feel like I'm taking the reigns, not my family practice doctor. After cultures taken during PAP came back negative, I was basically dismissed. I demanded a blood test and to be seen again as something was clearly wrong. Although I don't really have the blisters/lesions, I had many other symptoms. I will get a new OB/Gyn, but can't get in for a few months...

That being said, can you guide me on what to be asking my doctor? I see some numbers and acronyms thrown out that I don't fully understand, nor know if it's necessary to ask?

I (again) demanded they redo blood work in 10 weeks to give me a specific diagnosis as well as test for HIV. Should that cover it? Anything I'm missing?

Also, she prescribed 1g Valtrex 3x per day. She gave a 30 day supply with 3 refills. I believe from reading up that's far too high. What had your dosage been so I can get that in check?

Much Thanks;)

Itchy

at this point you don't even know if you have herpes so I'd just wait and follow up with testing. if you want, notify both partners that your provider suspects genital herpes and they should seek out type specific herpes igg blood testing to see what their own status is too.

I have to continue with a few more questions! Apologies!!

Basically, I'd like to inform as many past sexual partners as possible (obviously), but need to do my part to notify those I must.

Timeline:
July 2011-Feb 2012: Relationship where he was not faithful
March 17: One night stand (dam* beer & st. patricks day)
March 23: Initial symptoms, thought I had a UTI.
March 26: Doctor... All STD tests came back negative.Went back for HSV blood test.
April 4: Doctor called with positive, non-specific HSV test results.

I had assumed that I contracted herpes (albeit non-type specific) from my March 17 encounter, as I got symptoms 6-7 days later.

What are your thoughts? No way I can be sure of who I got it from? Who do I need to tell?

I am NOT looking to point fingers... Truly. I am sure that no matter whom I contracted it from likely didn't/doesn't know they have it.  But I am trying to minimize "spreading the word" as in our circle of friends; news will spread like wildfire.

unfortunately they ordered a non-type specific herpes igg blood test which is a waste of time and money :(  it tells you nothing about your herpes status.

wait 3 months post encounter and make sure they do type specific herpes igg blood testing. should you get a return of symptoms before then, be seen promptly for a lesion culture and typing ( not a pap test ).

If we assume this is herpes and that it is recently acquired, the proper treatment with valtrex would be 1gm 2x/day for 7 days.
