Scared to death....
I am afraid I have herpes and am mortified. I'm going through stages where I'm positive it's herpes, and some where I hope it's not, because some things about my symptoms seem unlike classic herpes. The current scare started today, and I have made up my mind to go to a doctor tomorrow, but I can't rest right now. Please help me.
This is the worst part that makes me think it's herpes: It happened 4 months ago, the same symptoms, and went away. I was sure it wasn't herpes because it didn't look like most of the pictures of herpes I saw, so I didn't go to a doctor. Also, I had been at a ranch for a while, and consoled myself by the fact I had worn the same underwear and jeans a while without showering, so I thought it was probably a fungus or irritation from not being clean. I havent had sex since then.
That first time, it showed up possibly the very next day after I had sex with a girl with a condom. It is possible that it occurred before, or after, but I'm pretty sure it happened the next day. I noticed small red bumps right in the crease between my groin and thigh. They looked like mosquito bites and itched. They spread to where there were red dots and splotches covering a large portion of my testicles, as well as around the skin before the base of my penis, and a couple of days later, some showed up on the other side, in the crease between my thigh and groin, and some red dots extending out on about an inch of my thigh. They looked like little mosquito bites.
I didn't think it was herpes because it began on that crease around the thigh, and there were dots in a lot of places; I thought herpes was usually on the shaft or head, and fairly localized.
My red dots didn't have whiteheads. Some just looked like red blotches, while others looked like mosquito bites. One red splotch about the size of a pea appeared on the shaft, but went away without itching or breaking. As I said, most of the red dots didn't end up having broken skin, but some did because I scratched them. I thought herpes sores were more like blisters that were fluid filled, so I didn't think about it after they went away a week or 2 later.
So, the same thing happened today, and I am in a panic, mortified. Whatever this is, it is the same as the last time, which was about 4 months ago.
I remember scratching an itch a night or two ago in the crease between my thigh and groin (on the opposite side from where it started last time). Today, it was more irritated, and I closely examined it. It also has spread to wear there are red spots on the base of my penis, a couple on the lower part of the shaft near the base, and many on my testicles. Most of them don't hurt or really itch. As last time, they don't have white heads, nor do they appear to contain any fluid, but the skin is broken on some of them, I think from scratching. I am freaking out, because I have read that herpes symptoms often don't hurt very bad at all, and often aren't blisters, but can be mistaken for mosquito bites.
Most of them do not hurt really. However, the main dime-sized area where it began, on that crease between my thigh and groin, is broken skin. It doesn't hurt that bad, but it does hurt as any raw area would. I inspected it and noticed several tiny areas of broken skin within the dime sized area, which is scaring me; however, they don't look like pimples or blisters, and arent really raised, but look more like just several little areas with no skin. I never saw any blisters.
The main fact that I'm hanging my hopes on is that it's not a localized area that looks like the "clusters" I have seen with classic herpes.
I have the area on my inner thigh, red dots scattered over my testicles, some near the base of my penis, and one red bump on the area under my belly button wear my waistband covers.
Please let me know whether this sounds like herpes, and thank you.

Yeah, I'm obviously waiting for test results; however, I was just told by a dermatologist that it was herpes if it came after a sexual encounter. And he was equivocal and contradictory about his diagnosis, so I am not confident.
Um, why don't you wait for your culture results before jumping the gun?
You're not the doctor, so your statements of "[w]ell, then, it's herpes, because ... " holds no weight. Unless you have an M.D. behind your name, I would not put any stock in your "self-diagnosis." Sorry. You need a positive culture or a positive blood test. You can go from there.

Also, he said that for now, I think it's shingles, but that if it comes back again, it's herpes, because shingles doesn't recur. I said, well then, it's herpes, because I am 100% sure that the condition I had a few months ago was the same as this one. He didn't say much to that.
Hey. Thanks for the support and time you've taken. Unfortunately, I am pretty much resigned to the fact at this point that it is herpes. I've been thinking all day about how my dating life won't ever be the same.
I went to the doctor (dermatologist) this morning. I told him I was concerned it was herpes before he looked.
When he first looked, he said "This is real good," and said it didn't look anything like herpes. He then said it was probably shingles. But then, he said he didn't think it was herpes because it would have shown up soon after a sexual encounter. I clearly informed him that this was the second time this had shown up, and that I was certain this was the same condition as the one I experienced a few months ago; I also told him several times that the first episode WAS soon after a one night stand, even though I wore a condom. He seemed not to really acknowledge that.
He took a biopsy, and said the results of the particular test he was going to have done would come back positive whether it was shingles or herpes. I asked him what good that would do me, and that I wanted to know if it was herpes or not, and he told me we could do blood tests later.
I asked him point blank that if this condition had shown up soon after sex, if he would think it was herpes, and he nodded and said probably.
He did say that this condition was more wide spread than herpes is, and that herpes is usually confined to a smaller region, but that shingles is more widespread like what I have.
My hope I was holding onto was that my spots, 80% of them, are not blisters, but just red splotches. But, when I saw the shingles pictures he showed me, the blisters looked more pronounced than even the herpes pictures I've seen.
Anyway, he went on to say that it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had herpes, I could still have kids, etc, which makes me believe that he was just scared to tell me he thought it was herpes because of how worried I was. He did say when I left that he still thought it was shingles.
After the visit, all in all, I'm 99.9% sure it's herpes. I never thought it could be something without the classic blisters that I could mistake for a rash. I have no hope left that it's something other than genital herpes. This sucks.

There is such a thing called autoinoculation, but as a couple of the veterans on this site pointed out, it's a very rare thing to give herpes to yourself if you've all ready got it.

Of course it's going to be tender, the zits on your nose. Give it a couple of days, then pop it. Or go ahead and dry it up w/ some rubbing alcohol or some astringent. It's not herpes. Usually herpes blisters are just that...blisters. Clear fluid-filled bubbles.
You're going to be just fine. Don't let your imagination get the best of your health. Calm down, take a couple of steps back. If you're that worried go and get tested.
