Shingles

My 89 yr old grandmother was diagnosed with "the worst cast of shingles I have ever seen" by her gp last year. While the original outbreak has healed she is still have frequent pain and itching in the same location (scalp, face and eye lid). Other than pain meds are there any other treatments that she could benefit from at this point? She lives in Washington state, are there any specialists there that she should consider going to?

Thank you.

Thanks! My GM has CHF, which it sounds like Lyrica isn't very compatible with but it helps to have the info. Happy New Year!

It sounds like your grandmother is suffering from post - herpetic neuralgia :(  It can linger for months if not years unfortunately. She needs to follow up on this with her doctor and/or a neurologist. There are both topical medications she can try as well as pills she can take to try to help with it. Lyrica is the oral medication of choice now I think. Topical lidocaine as well as hot pepper creams are also helpful.
