Tonsillitis and Herpes

Hello,

Close to two years ago I was diagnosed with HSV1 with two low positive test results. I did a full STD testing after a unsafe encounter with a female. No other tests came back positive even up to a year after testing. I have had no symptoms of HSV1 orally or genitally since the encounter. However, today I have what I believe is Tonsillitis (cold like symptoms, fever, sore throat, white spots on tonsils, etc.)

Is it possible that this is an HSV1 outbreak?  Searching the internet it indicates tonsillitis is not very common in adults. However, it also seems rare for oral herpes to affect the throat so far after the potential exposure (as most websites indicate this only occurs in the initial outbreak).  I am curious as I want to just make sure I take the correct precautions...either way I know I'm contagious, but at the same time it will help to know what it is. Also, just wondering if this could be the initial outbreak so long after exposure.

Thank you!

yes, illness is known to trigger shedding.

Thanks Grace,

This is good info. So if I understand correctly this specifically doesn't sound like herpes and in fact is just tonsillitis or some other upper respiratory infection, but I am more like to shed the virus any time that I am ill even if I don't have any signs (i.e. cold sore).

Thanks for all you do here.

this is an upper respiratory infection, not a herpes issue.

if you really do have hsv1, it wouldn't be unusual to be shedding the virus orally when you are otherwise ill.
