What are my chances of HSV transmission?

Approximately two weeks ago I began to develop mild folliculitis. This happens from time to time, and I was not worried. However - 4 days ago, I received oral sex with someone who appeared to have 3 small crusted lesions on her lips. They were difficult to detect due to her freckles. After the encounter, I showered and shaved my pubic area which angered the folliculitis. The folliculitis has not become enraged - I went to a dermatologist who prescribed acne face wash and clindamycin phosphate gel. The only current symptoms I have are small red pus-filled blisters which are centered around hair follicles along the shaft of my penis and surrounding genital area, and swollen lymph nodes.

The timing of the folliculitis outbreak is less than ideal. My two questions are - 1) what is the chance of transmission of HSV to my genital area? 2) When am I 'in the clear' (when can I stop freaking out)?

Thank you!

First, try to remember that you don't know that what she had on her mouth is herpes. It could an allergic reaction, something called Behçet's disease, cheilitis, or any number of other things.

If it is herpes, and she had outbreaks, there is a chance you'd get it. It's impossible to put a number on this - no one knows where she was in the outbreak process, how much virus was present, etc etc.

I wouldn't be freaking out now, so you can stop. If you don't already have hsv1, you'd likely get symptoms within 2-20 days. You can ask your doctor for a type specific IgG herpes blood test. If it's negative now, and positive later, you know it's a new infection.

Please do your skin a favor and stop shaving, at least for awhile. All signs are telling you to stop - you are "enraging" it. If you must groom the area, get some trimmers or something, and trim the area, but shaving is only causing you harm right now. Most women don't mind it unshaven, so long as it's neatly groomed. Trim it down to almost nothing if you want, but give your skin a rest. :)
