A few times a year I get a herpes type outbreak on my right hip, just at the top of my thigh. It starts with a soreness in my hip joint and an ache in my leg. The skin becomes tender to touch, then within a day, I have a quarter size red splotch. If not treated with acyclovir immediately, the splotch opens to blisters. It has never become larger than the quarter-size area. Ice packs relieve the pain. I had herpes of the right eye about 25 years ago, and used to get many cold sores. I also experienced an outbreak of genital herpes, although now the only place I get any rash at all is on the hip area. My question - My doctors in the past never diagnosed any of this as either type 1 or type 2 herpes. When I asked a few years back, I was the hip outbreak was just a manifestation of the virus in the nerve on the right side of my body. I am only concerned for health reasons in the future. I am very healthy and "kick" this within a day or two. What can happen in the future? Would my records show type 1 or 2, or do I have to request a blood test. Is this a common thing?
