zovirax cream isn't helpful for genital herpes recurrences which is why we no longer recommend it for genital herpes. it didn't heal lesions any faster than using a placebo.
betadine is an oldie but a goodie - be aware that it does stain clothing though.
at this point you need to return to be seen to make sure that hsv1 is all that is going on genitally. if it is all hsv1 related, trying daily suppressive therapy is the best course of action. since symptoms are always occurring with your period, ruling out other causes is certainly worthwhile.

Have you asked your doctor about suppressive medication?
I know I use betadine (the cold sore one) or zovirax cream they are both for cold sores (they are sold over the counter at the pharmacy for the sort on your lips)...they say not for internal use so it depends on where your sores out. Mine are outside (well away from the tender bits) and it does help a bit. I also sit on an ice pack when I can...that really helps...a lot. Or I try and avoid wearing underwear at all when I have outbreaks--just a skirt and no knickers...its a lot more comfortable as the sores don't stick and they can dry out. One Dr I saw suggested going on the 3 month pill--so I had less periods and therefore less outbreaks...the pill doesn't agree with me but it might be an idea.
I wanted to thanks...I know it is kind of weird...but I have had a lot of problem recently with conflicting typing tests. I know that the person I got H from had a cold sore on his lip...and my western blot said I was HSV 1 only but I had a pcr test on a sore that said HSV 2. My current dr is telling me to not bother with more tests because I have too many outbreaks for it to be genital HSV 1 (I get 1 a year on suppressives). The guy I really love is HSV 1 positive and not to keen to be exposed genitally to HSV 2. So the stakes are pretty high for me. It give me hope to know that recurrent gHSV1 can happen despite my Dr saying it is impossible.
