My left outer labia is red and swollen and is getting bumps on it. My boyfriend had a cold sore, but not an open one, and he gave me oral sex saying everything will be fine, but now I am worried

indeed you need to be seen today if at all possible. find a walk in clinic if your regular provider doesn't have saturday hours.

oral hsv1 can be transmitted to the genital area. Your bf having an active cold sore at the time he performed oral sex puts you at higher risk of contracting it .

if you started to take the acyclovir, too late for a lesion culture :(

might as well wait until monday at this point to be seen.

and yes it really does suck when you finally get over one thing and something else starts up to annoy the heck out of you :(    last thing you need is your nether regions being irritated when you have other health issues :(

Hi Grace,

Many thanks your promptness.  I basically called my local out of hours service provider, and as soon as I got my prescription I started to take it.  I will call them again 1st thing tomorrow, and insist that I am seen by someone.  I live in the North West of England, and feel that all the cost cutting in the NHS is getting out of hand.

My bf left today for a 2 1/2 week holiday in India and I feel so alone.  I cannot go back to the clinic today as have had a few drinks, to help ease my other pain ( I prolapsed 2 discs in August) and have only just started to have sex again. I have just started to take a buprenorphine patch again on Monday, after coming off it 2 weeks ago, as the pain got too much. I know this is not relevant to my genital problem, but this really feels like an additional problem that I really could do without.  My only positive is that I finally get my MRI scan next week after kicking up a real stink :-(

this is very poor medicine :(

you need to be seen and get a proper exam and testing. taking the acyclovir now will just keep you from finding what really is going on. not getting a lesion culture done now before you start acyclovir, may delay finding out if you really contracted hsv1 genitally or not by months if not longer :(    I encourage you to not start the acyclovir and be seen somewhere else where they actually do a proper exam and testing.

Thank you Grace.
I rang up my local walk in clinic for an appointment.  I was told to describe my symptoms and that a doctor would ring me back.  After what seemed like an agonisingly slow wait, a doctor finally called me back.

I described my symptoms and I thought his manner was quite unprofessional, he was supressing laughter, which I thought rather undignified,  He asked me if I shaved and I said yes, but not for the last week or so.  He just told me to come to reception and a prescription of Aciclovir will be waiting for me, and to take it for 5 days.  I was not seen by anyone, so the doctor cannot 100% know if I have actually contracted genital herpes!  I expected that I would be seen in clinic and tests would be done, and I would have then asked for an STI test as I have never had one.

I will take the Aciclovir as prescribed.  I am due to be seen by the practice nurse in a few weeks for a routine check up, so will have a chat with her.

I must admit, I feel very disapointed with the lack of care I received.  I have never been in this situation before, and never had any sexual health testing done as have never suffered any problems.  I am not promiscuous, in fact, for a long time I was celibate as sex was painful for me, and I was finally diagnosed with endometriosis about 3 years ago, which was a tremendous relief for me to finally have an answer to why I had been in pain for so long.

My ex boyfriend also suffered with cold sores, but I never had any problems in my genital area before.

Anyway thanks again, I probably would have done nothing and just put up with the discomfort if I had not plucked up the courage to write on this site.

no one bothers to spend the time to talk to us about herpes - either orally or genitally :(    symptoms typically occur within 2-20 days of being infected so considering it all, ruling out herpes is certainly a good idea.

stop back and let us know how your appointment went. hopefully they also tested you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally too.

Thank you for your advise, I will go to a walk in clinic.

I do have flu like symptoms, and a sore throat, but we only had sex on Wednesday 23rd Nov, and I started to feel unwell last night, so that's very quick.  I just assumed I was getting tonsilitis, but when I saw I was swollen down below I paniced. I feel so embarrased :-(

It doesnt matter if its open sore or not. He is more contagious when its open however it still contagious. First outbreak is usually for most very painful with ful like symptoms and usually happens a few weeks after being infected. Sounds like there is a good chance you may have genital herpes. Get it checked out asap...
