damn, just got the results back and it said I was negative again.  Looks like Igg is not accurate with me or maybe the suppression therapy that I took two weeks ago brought it down.  This is a big disappointment.  What do you suggest I do now??  Was already positive with a culture and nothing comes up for igg.  maybe i had it for a long time and never knew because I always tested negative.  this is depressing.  I want to know who I got it from.  This puts be right back to where I was at.  Any suggestions because as of now I am completely lost...

grace, since her positive is a low positive does that means if she is infected then it is a new infection that I most likely gave to her???

just repeated my igg resting.  I hope this time it clears it up.  How often is someone with her score a false positive??  Does her results on HSV1 make it HSV2 higher??

since she's never had symptoms, she should confirm her status with a herpes wb blood test just to be sure.

you'll have better answers once you repeat your igg testing.

ok grace here is the results from my girlfriend.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type I >5.00 <0.90 Positive 07/30/2012 07/31/2012
Herpes Simplex Virus Type II 2.43 <0.90 Positive 07/30/2012 07/31/2012

Does this pretty much mean she gave it to me??  I know that is a low positive. If its low like that does that mean it is a newer infection?? I still want to get tested one more time to see if I become positive.  Then that should tell if it is a new infection.  Like I said before, she never has had a outbreak that she knew of.  Thanks for your help

the tests we have look at specific parts of the igg response to infection with herpes. because we are all different, some folks don't make all the same exact responses as everyone else does.  the tests we have on average are helpful for 95% of folks. no test for anything is ever 100% accurate just most of us don't question the results.

absolutely no way to guess at this point if you had staph, a herpes ob or both back in february.

What makes a person not test accurately on a Igg test??  That kind of throws out the reliablitly of that test, right??  I have been using them for two years and always thought if they were not accurate on one then the next one they would.  do you think my staph infection in feb was more than likely a outbreak that got infected??  even though the symptoms for atypical??

if your current gf is negative, not likely you got it from her.

a small percentage of folks won't test accurately on the igg blood tests. not likely you and a partner would both be part of that small percentage both though. make sense?

Grace and anyone else,  ok here is a update.  Hopefully you can help me.  My gf got tested yesterday and am waiting on the results.  I went to the doctor and he showed me the results from culture.  Here is how the results are on the sheet:

ABN LOW      NORMAL      HIGH        UNITS  REF RNG SITE

Herpes Simplex by PCR
Source:               Swab in M4
HSV, Type 1      Not Detected                              Not Detected
HSV Type 2       Detected ABN                            Not Detected

So its saying I have HSV 2 and not HSV 1.  He said ABN stands for abnormal.  So thats that.  It looks like I got it.  My concern now is pinpointing when I got it.  The doctor thought it was highly unusual that I got a bacterial infection in Feb that was so close to the outbreak area in July.  In Feb it looked nothing like the outbreak in july.  The reason it is important to know if it was an outbreak in Feb is because I want to know if I got it from a girl I slept with or from my girlfriend.  I do find it odd that I did use protected in jan and the site of the outbreak is in my pubic region.  I never use protection with my girlfriend.  But then again.  I tested IGG negative in Feb and again in July.  I talked to the girl I slept in Jan with and she says she doesnt have herpes and even said she went out and got tested last week after I talked with her and it was negative.  She said she would send the results to me but I told her not too.  My doc precribed me antivirals but I think I am going to wait and not take them because I want to get another blood test and see what my results are.  I am at peace with this if my gf gave it to me because I plan a long term relationship with her and she didnt know she had it.  She says she has never had a outbreak.    Not sure how common it is for women never to have an outbreak.  I always heard women had it the worst.  What are your thoughts?

It's been over two weeks and there are no scabs now .  But it is still red and itchy.  It won't go away.  I don't go home for another week.  Is this normal.  I thought it is suppose to go away after it scabs.  I think I had scabs.  If I did they were very small.  Any suggestions??

Yes when I get back next week.  I also see the doctor.  I will ask for the paper confirming my condition.  I'm still in shock about the entire situation

odds are that you would've tested + in july if you had contracted it in february.  I know that someone has to be the exception to the rule but when it comes to herpes testing, the vast majority of folks aren't.

did your partner schedule testing yet?

Did you call your Doctor and confirm your culture was typed for 1 or 2?

Yes it does make sense.  I'm off anti vitals now.  How long do I need to wait now to get a accurate test??  Also, like I said I tested in Feb when I had what I thought was inpetigo but now my doctor says that could of been my initial outbreak.  I tested negative in Feb for both.  And again in July.  I'm just wondering maybe my body doesn't detect the virus because maybe I have been infected for a long time and never knew it because the test never picked it up.  What do you think??

the ob doesn't usually heal while you are still on antivirals. a newly acquired infection can take 2-3 weeks on average to heal even if you treat it. sometimes it takes longer even.

if your partner is negative for hsv2 and you tested + for it on the lesion culture then you know it's not newly acquired. If your partner tests + for it on igg testing, you know it's a newly acquired infection since you previously tested negative. make sense?

Ok I plan on doing all that when I get back into town in 2 weeks.  I want to get another igg test to see if it is a new infection.  Grace, how long do I need to wait for a accurate test if I'm on anti virals for one week.  Taking three a day.  I have one more day left of them.  I'm surprised the outbreak area is not completely healed.  It's still red

no reason to pay for a consult for Terri at this point actually. You need your gf to get tested and confirm your own lesion culture results as being hsv2 and go from there. this is all things we can actually handle here for you for free :)

Terri Warren on the Herpes Forum would be a good person to get into contact with.  Her clinic takes phone patients as well.  Maybe it's possible your Doctor assumed it was type 2 since it was genital.  I think some culture tests out there are not specific so you should find that out.  Terri Warren can answer your test timing questions.

She doesn't know her status yet.  She is going to get tested soon.  I asked the doc what type of hsv it is and he said hsv2. I have not actually seen the results.  When I go back in a week or so, I'm going to ask.  How long do I need to wait before I get a accurate test??  I have been on anti virals for a week so far.  If I stayed off them a week should I be ok to get a accurate test??

Do you know if your culture was type sensitive?  Maybe you have HSV1 genital

has she been tested yet to know her own status?

you could've been with a partner for a lifetime and never contracted herpes from them. it's not something that is typically transmitted within the first few sexual encounters with a partner.

Yes, I have a regular partner and really want to know where I got it from.  I have been with her for about a year.  Had a break with her in Jan and have been back with her since.  Like I said I tested my blood at the same time I did for the culture.  Wouldn't I have gotten it from her earlier if she had it instead of getting it almost a year later.  I'm really just confused and broken about this whole situation.  I don't think she ghave it to me but I don't know.  To be honest I would feel better if she gave it to me instead of me to her.  what do you suggest??

if you wait the appropriate time, most igg herpes tests are greater than 90% accurate with most of them being closer to 96-98%. just depends on the brand of test.  your body always makes igg antibodies against herpes infection, it's just the tests we use only look at a particular part of the igg response.

really no reason to ever repeat your igg blood test if you had a + hsv2 lesion culture.

do you have a regular partner?

Grace, how reliable is the igg test??  If the body doesn't create antibodies then the igg test does not work??  My situation is I had a outbreak.  Got a blood test and culture test at the same time.  Culture came back positive and blood negative.  I was put on antivirals for a week.  Will this mess up my future blood test??  I plan on going on suppression therapy but want to know if this is a new infection.  It is unknown because now there is a debate whether a inpetigo infection I had in the same pubic area in Feb was actually a outbreak too.  I got tested igg blood tested in Feb and it was negative and again in July when Tue first recognizable outbreak occurred.  I'm just wondering how reliable igg test are because if your body doesn't create anti bodies then it won't pick up the infection.
