Hello there,
My horse is very susceptible to mud fever and I make cream myself that is very effective I find. Using about 200gr Aqueous Cream as a base I add 15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil, 7 drops Thyme Essential Oil, 7 drops Chamomile Essential Oil and 2 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil. (Garlic Essential Oil in place of Thyme is meant to be very effective too). Apply it to the scabs - don't remove them or bandage it. Don't wash the area too much as dampness is a friend to all fungi, if you have to wet it make sure you dry the area thoroughly. If the condition continues for more than 10 days or swelling occurs see your vet.
Many thanks for your advice, seems to be ok now - bear in mind for next winter
Yes, to the question about mud fever. My horse is getting over it , and had the red sores and patches. If it is muddy where you are, especailly, the mud fever lives in the soil and is looking for an opportunity. Best to clean the horses legs (rinsing) and keeping body clean.
Why she looks tucked up is a question for the vet, but it could be she is not drinking enough. Make sure she has access to CLEAN water every day. Tucked up basically looks like she is sucking in her stomach and stifle area.
