Adenmyosis- Pain after hysterectomy

I am 40 years old and had a hysterectomy a little over a year ago due to painful periods and heavy bleeding.  I am still having pain on my right side and seems to be more intense around ovulation (still have ovaries).  I also have bouts of nausea and vomiting and lower back pain on the right side as well.  I have been through all the tests imaginable an still have not gotten a definite diagnosis.  My last visit to an OBGYN I was told they found adenmyosis after my hysterectomy and I could possibly still have some residual left after the hysterectomy if they did not remove it all, however the GYN felt around on my stomach and said he didnt feel anything and I should come back when the pain is severe for him to check again because there was no way he could tell other than that.  I have read on the internet where an MRI, which is the only test I have not had can be used to see if this exists.  I am really at my wits end because I have gotten nothing but the run around and every Dr I go to seems to treat me as if there is nothing wrong or I should just suffer with the pain all the time.  It has really had an affect on my daily life, I am not as active as I used to be because I hurt most of the time.  If anyone has had the same thing after a hysterectomy I would love to know how you were diagnosed and what kind of treatment was prescribed.  I am really tired of dealing with it but I am also tired of going to the Dr only to be dismissed or referred out to someone else because they really dont care to deal with finding out what is wrong.

I am having a total hysterectomy in 2 days. I have endometriosis, a fibroid, painful sex, painful masturbation(for real!) and extreme pain with heavy periods.  I also have adenomyosis (this is when the endometrial tissue begins to grow in the muscular wall of the uterus).  I can see that you would still have ovulation pain if you have both ovaries (unfortunately). Other pain my be caused by cysts that have grown or adhesions (scar tissue) that's built up as you are healing from your operation. I hope this helps.

My first laproscopic surgery, the pamphlet said in 2 days I should be returning to my normal routine. YEAH RIGHT!! It took 2 weeks and I thought something was really wrong with me...until I read on one of these kind of blogs that another woman took about 2 weeks to start to return to normal.  Every body is different and the doctors don't STRESS THIS ENOUGH!! I wish you luck and hope you are feelilng better!!

I can't believe the stories. I am in so much pain I was released for work 2 weeks after laproscopic surgery. My hips, pelvis, and rectum is killing me.  I only got a 4 day supply of pain medication and I'm in a lot of pain. Idk what to do. I don't even wanna go back to my doctor, its all been a nightmare.

Hi, I think you are making a good choice, I hope the Dr gives you some answers, and I hear you on the motrin, women who post on here do need pain meds but they all just mask the problem ( sometimes this can be bad example if cyst is about to rupture and one doesnt feel it cause of pain meds)  but anyways you will likely need a stronger pain med until your problem is resolved, If they give you narcotics and they probably will, ask Dr if he thinks you should take a stool softner with it,,,narcotics are always binding and constipation with the problems you have would increase pain, be sure to drink plenty of water too,

I am def calling the Dr this week  I thought I would wait til the holidays were over but .  I am getting to my breaking point with it again.  I just wont seem to go away this month.  Thanks for the advice and after 21 years in the military I have built a tolerance to Motrin - it is their fix-all for everything!

Hi I am not allowed by MH guidlines to suggest medicine however I do know that many women benifit from a anti inflamitory med such as motrin , maybe phone dr and ask about that it is available over the counter. dosage is listed on botttle, also motrin 800 mg is available as a prescription I always figured a milligram is a milligram so when I need prescription motrion I have taken 4 2oo mg tabs, however you must ask Dr about this.


so I hope you  get this post before phoning Dr...good luck. I know it stinks feeling like you do . Ive been there,,,one more idea,,try ice pac,,NO heat heat will always increase swelling and bleeding risk, when one uses a ice pack it should be 15 min on with a barrier such as a wash cloth and 15 min off you can repeat as often as youd like.

Thanks for the post and the Dr said they diagnosed the adenmyosis after my uterus was removed during the hysterectomy which explains why I was throwing up for two years prior to having my hysterectomy and the Drs could never find out why.  I also had swelling just above my pelvic area that they could never figure out either.  I have had two C-Sections, tubal, and now the hysterectomy and they have cut along the same scar each time so my guess is they didnt get it all because of all the scar tissue.  Right now I have a cold and when I cough I can actually feel exactly where it is.  I am calling my Dr back again tomorrow to get another referral.  I am retired military so I have been bounced around from Dr to Dr over the past year.  I am only taking pamprin right now because it is the only thing I have the helps me sleep at night due to the pain on my right side.  My weight has also creeped up just due to feeling like crap all the time.  Thanks again and I will be making another call tomorrow!

Hi I had my hysterectomy because of adenomyosis too, usually it causes the uterus only to become thick, boggy (sponge like) it is possible to have some of that tissue left just like when a woman has endometriosis and some tissue is left it can grow on any smooth muscle or glandular tissue in abdomen/pelvic this is what I think may be your problem.

In my opinion the best way a Dr can diagnosis this is a diagnostic laproscopic test/surgery the good thing about this would be he/she can remove the tissue if it is there during this procedure.

as for the back/side pain it is likely related to this.

your pain during ovulation , if its ovulation. try to keep a record and see if its every other month cause you alternate the ovary that ovulates every other month. I have to wonder if you may have a cyst, it sounds possible I had ovarian cysts and they do make one have severe pain/vomit sometimes...of your pain is 7 or above, if you get a fever, if your instincts just tell you too, do go to theER they are obligated to treat your pain and they have all the equipment to give some tests ( they will not do a lap)(unless emergencey) more likely a transvag ultra sound wich in my opinion is not the best test.

I HAD my ovary still w big cyst addheared to my bowel w andeo tissue and sometimes they could see my ovary sometimes not. I am not a heavy woman, if you are being heavy makes it harder for this test to be accurate.

Why and how did your Dr determine you had andenomiosis tissue, he would have to see it. Im curious about that JUST RE-READ HE IS BASING IT ON A HUNCH HE IS LIKELY RIGHT.

I understand the frustration and it seems some Drs just want to hand out the pain pills Im sure you need them for now but.......they are a bandaid...its not a cure which is what you need..one last thought..IF your on narcotics the ALWAYS are constipating...if your not moving bowels this could account for some of the pain, ask Dr his opinion of you taking stool sofners,,these are available over the coubter, DO NOT take laxatives wayyyy too harsh.

Lastly I really do get what your going through your story sounds o much like mine it took me about two years to get everything fixed properly, with learning all I did and working in health care I decided to do all I can to help other women never go through what I did.

My theory try nice twice , if it doesnt work switch it up to B$%^& mode. sounds mean but we are talking about your health..if you have andeno tissue on bowels it can be quite serious
