when to get a hysterectomy?

Having issues over the last year. How do you know what type hysterectomy is right for you and what to take out? I think I am heading closer to that decision in the coming year. What are the biggest complications post surgery besides infection. Incontinence??continued pain? How long does surgery take and how long in hospital?

This post is the best advice I've had a chance to read thus far. I will be having a supracervical - and my gyno. will have to go through the c-section incision - so I expect I will have to stay in the hospital for at least 2 days tops (hopefully)...I'm just so fearful - because I have stairs in my home and I will be home alone during the day for the most part of the recovery...I'm also fearful about the surgery - I don't really want to have it - but after having the ablation surgery - which by the way was a total flop - I am still bleeding and in pain - the reason why I want to have the surgery anyway - I'm so tired of the heavy bleeding and pain. Well, thanks for the advice - I am totally praying for God's best with this....

Hi welcome to our forum,

I think your Dr should definatley have outlined your options for you of thypes of hysterectomys.

That being said, the DaVinci Robotic assisted hysterectomy is considered top of the line.
You have to find a Dr trained in it. When I had my DaVinci in 05 there where perhaps 5 surgeons whom knew how to do this...by now many many more, Gyns want to learn

heres why...only 3-5 small incisions 1/2 inch or less, rods are placed in and abdomen distended by gas. Camera inserted in rod, rotated to others as needed for view....surgeon can make very very small internal incisions.Cautersations, much easier heal time,

Yes it hurts you cant have organs removed with out pain. You will be on IV drip with antibiotics, antibiotics sent home...and instructions of looking for infection...redness from wound site, radiating up or around,,,any puss or fever.

Urinary difficulty (hard time to void) is a more common temp condition due to being catherised...this passes quickly 2 days max.

Usually hospital stay is 2-3 days..they have you up and walking day 2. It hurts but is best,,you get rid of trapped gas,,and the longer one lays in bed the harder it is to eventually get up and move...it is a short walk down hall, you will increase as time passes. They want you to be able to get up at home bathroom, quick trip to fridge etc.
Advice..listen to post op advice...take it very very easy...rest alot...6 week recovery pain gets better every few days...they will give you narcotics, watch out for constipation due to the narcotics...( dont want to push hard after a hyster)  if dr doesnt offer or prescribe ask for stool softner,. I folded a basket of towels of day 3 home it sent me into agony..one really must sit or lay on couch, let your body heal.
by a icepack it helps w pain on 15 min off 15 min NO heat will make bleed and swell,

I wish you the best anymore specific questions Im here

I had a LAVH (lap assisted vaginal). What type of hysterectomy depends on several factors. Lap assisted isn't an option for some people... nor is vaginal. I have friends who had to have abdominal because of cancer concerns or the size of their uterus.

There is also an option now to leave your cervix. Many women prefer this, and I believe it reduces your hospital stay as well. I chose to have mine removed simply because I didn't want pap smears and I had an abnormal pap years ago.

Unless you have problems with your ovaries, you'll probably keep them (that's an oophrectomy I believe). Losing your ovaries will send you into menopause.

I stayed in the hospital one night. I think (*think*) the one where you keep your cervix can sometimes be outpatient? The TAH (abdominal) is a few days...

My main 'issue' was temporary menopause. The surgery can put your ovaries into shock, and it did for me. I had hot flashes and night sweats from about 2-8 weeks post-op, then they stopped.

I got TONS of information from hystersisters . com. They have SO many articles and info.

HTH - good luck.

I can honestly say it has helped me so much... no pain, no constant bleeding... I didn't have an option, though - it would have been a tough decision otherwise!

Good luck :-)
