Hiccoughs are a nuisance! Has he tried the 'holding breath till you're nearly blue in the face' method? The secret to that is to take a long deep strong breath in first and hold on tight to it. That usually works.
they also used to say crunching on some sugar works for Hiccoughs when my DH gets them they last for ages, and he is very uncomfortable .....hes going to try the remedies put up here next time ..
Something else that works well for hiccups: Fill a large glass with water and hold breath while drinking as much as you can as fast as you can. This has been the only thing I've ever come across that works for me. It resets the diaphragm and it's just water. Try different temps, but I find that just the usual temp that I drink is all that is required. And, it's practically free. Can't beat that.
....Oh, while I remember....my husband had a terrible asthma attack one night, and he had lost his inhaler! I remembered that one of the meds he'd taken for the asthma (but had run out of) was a substance very similar to Caffeine.
So I made him a deathly-strong brew of coffee. So strong it would make any normal person nauseous. I told him to take very small sips of it. He did, and within 5 minutes the asthma attack had passed
I always use Herbal remedies if or when I can. They work about 98% of the time. If they didn't work, I wouldn't bother.
But there are also other weird remedies that are supposed to work. Have you heard of that old fashioned remedy for nose bleeds? Put a cold key down your back? I have never tried that....wonder if it works!? (mind you, that doesn't take into account the CAUSE of the nose bleed in the first place!
When my mother had difficulty swallowing because of late stage dementia, the doctor said we should open the window, and let a blast of cold air come in suddenly onto her. My brother tried it and it worked! She could swallow OK straight away afterwards. There was a scientific reason for it! (something to do with stimulating the Vagus nerve)
So it does show that maybe some of these old-wives' tales have a basis in science???
