Do a google search for reverse osmosis. You will find a portable device, versus a whole system installation, that costs only around $100 that lasts quite a while. I haven't had the money for it, so I still use the kind of water filter that simply attaches to the kitchen sink that uses carbon filtration. My friends use the portable device and simply attach it to the faucet in the kitchen and filter a large water pitcher or two at a time. They use a plastic container and just keep it in the refrigerator when they're not using it. They've moved a couple of times while using this device and just take it with them.
I've been using the water filter that is sold by Walgreens that is actually Culligan's Spring. It's an improvement over just drinking directly out of the tap. From what I understand, it's actually a much better investment over buying all that bottled water, because much of the bottled water is not what they say it is. From what I understand, municipal water is actually safer in most respects. So, using a filter to remove as much of the chlorine and other chemicals as possible costs less money and is better for your health in the long run. Those filtration water pitchers use the same principal, but the one I put on the tap is actually cheaper than buying a new filtration pitcher. I still use the filtration pitchers, though. I've had my pitchers for several years now, so it's still quite economical. When you can buy the replacement filters in a multi-pack, that's the way to go, because in the long run that's more economical.
What I really want is the reverse osmosis portable, because that's actually the best for one's health. Haven't had the money for it on a fixed budget.
I agree I am one of those that have had effects from sweetners and still slip up sometimes with a diet 7up,so I drink water mostly it makes me feel better, I am still buying bottles though I really need to get a fiter system put on the tap, as we will be moving I suppose its more sense now to wait for that . hey maybe thats another question what kind of filters out there.
Water is the best drink anyway.
I've thought of an idea for kids who think water is boring. Take a soluble fizzy Vitamin C tablet and dunk it in the water. Voila! Fizzy orangeade! (or blackcurrant, etc)
My husband and I do that too. We ask for water with slices of lemon in it. Tastes great!
It also saves on calories for those of us who are weight challenged. I say save your calories for what you really want.
