DTAP SIDE EFFECTS

My grandaughter who is 18 mos. is going to get her first DTAP shot in June.  My daughter wanted to wait until her immune system was developed. She had given her Prevnar and HIb when she was 2 mos old and she got a horrible reaction from the Prevnar, being incosolable crying for 3 hours, no fever however. The reason we know this is because we wanted to try the Hib and see and she has completed that series.  So for all you moms out there, could you give me some comfort knowing it will be ok.  I have had three children and they are all immunized but did get bad reactions from the DPT.  There is so much info on immunizations, now.  I realize the importance and so does she.  She is trying to do the alternative vaccination schedule.  So any input would be great.
Thanks

I am being requested to also receive this shot to welcome a new grandchild.  Her mother has been told that there has been a new outbreak of whooping cough.  I am 68 years old and do not believe in shots or drugs of any kind.
how has your health been since you took the shot?

I am a 56 year old women in good health.  I had a DTap shot a week ago in preparation to meet my first grandchild who is to be born March 19. Today I noticed a sizable lump on my arm at the site of the injection.  This has just appeared.  It is slightly red.  Does anyone know if this is normal?  I cannot find anything online about this regarding an adult instead of a child with the DTap.
Thanks, Clara

You are correct. But there are people who believe the disapearance of these diseases are more to do with better health and sanitation. That doesnt make sense to me personally. You are also correct in that people like me are in a different position than you, as I had a bad reaction. But what about the 1st time reactions when a family is stuck in the terrible position of trying to prove an ADR. What you are saying is true, but is it moral. To sacrifice the few to save more? Well it depends on if your child made it through those ejections probably. I am not so sure. I also had a terrible experience in my life when my 27 yr old brother got a rare  tumour. Looking for a reason, I spoke with many people including a girl whoose mother had worked in a cancer hospital for over 40 years. Her mum had said she had never seen so many young people with rare types of cancer. Cancer used to be directly related to age or smoking, but she reckoned something has gort to be causing this. This has made me not go with anything that we dont have the long term studies for. Is it right to enject your 2 month old baby with a broth of killed disease and chemicals? Can this do any long term damage to the immune system over 20 years? How about if we also mix that with  other things such as a certain pesticide, or a certain food additive? My guess is  probably as accurate as the top doctor in the country. No one knows. There are more and more nervous system tumours developing in the young. Is it Mobiles? Diet Drinks? Magnetic fields? How about certain combinations?  I choose to go natural with my daughter as cancer is 1 in 3. There have been only 2 deaths in the UK from measles in the last 15 years. Something isnt right and for me injecting my kid so young with something so unnatural isnt right.

I think most people need to seriously consider being vaccinated. Sure, there are those who have a history of bad reactions and they have to make a personal choice and look out for their best interests. I don't disagree. However, if everyone stopped vaccinating, how long would it be before we saw a return of diseases and sicknesses almost non-existant today due to vaccination? With modern technology where you can be on the other side of the planet in a day, my guess is it wouldn't take long at all, perhaps even in as little as 5 to 10 years.

Vaccinations have their place in society and are necessary. As for me, I'm very thankful that my daughter has had all recommended vaccinations and has had them without any adverse reactions at all.

Just my 2 cents.

Our daughter was due her Whooping cough vaccinations last week at Ford Medical Practice in Litherland.  I have read countless stories like the ones above and the only good thing to come out of it is that, here we have information that is truthful, objective and is not swayed by financial rewards. Unless all these people are selling the few anti-vaccination books on the market, there is no reason to lie and give up our valuable time. We cannot compete against the government drive to reach vaccination targets, because quite simply, we havent got the financial muscle to do so. They could and most likely do employ the countries best web designers to manipulate Google, through using HTML tags. ( You can do that so your searches appear near the top.) For every 1 story like this, there will be official pro vaccination information above it in the Google Search lists. ( Usually very vague and manipulative information to encourage vaccination and over exaggerate the risk to the uninformed and gullable )
I had my Whooping cough vaccine in 1969 and symptoms started 5 mins afterwoods. I was hospitalised for 3 weeks very poorly and unresponsive. My Mum thought I would die. After a few days I broke out in a rash. The Hospital doctors chose to class my illness as Rubella for record purposes, but diagnosis doubtful. No ADR was reported through the yellow card scheme. My family doctor apparently said "Rubella My Foot", but didnt write up her opinion on my medical records.

I am livid. Of course mine was a bad reaction, yet I would find it hard to prove in court. It happened 5 minutes afterwoods. I could have died and I guess I would then have been used as a statistic to encourage the MMR in later years. Its inccorect, manipulative, immoral and dispicable to fiddle statistics in this way.

My girlfriend has now been scared to bits by Dr Williams over diptheria in Turkey, when at the most, there were only 24 cases in the worst year during the 1990's epidemic. ( out of a population of approx 70 million.) My poor girlfriend is now scared to go to Turkey, and so I guess it will be spain. Doctors know odds dont sink in with most people, but scare stories of what will happen to a baby with that disease do sink in. Im sure Dr Williams is unlikely to give me advice in writing like I requested. This is because she is covered against litigation if they follow procedures. I wrote out my history, and asked 10 questions. (next post) I'd be very surprised if she signed to say she has read my letter, or gave any written advice to us. Dr Williams may risk our little girls life , but not her surgery or Job.

Sadly, although Doctors give you the best advice on most health matters, they can act like sales people when it comes to vaccinations. You would think whooping cough is the biggest threat to our daughters life at odds of 1 in 50,000 of just getting it in the UK. Dr Williams answer was, well if it happens to your baby, it doesnt matter if its 1 in a million. Very true, but a poor answer. That doesnt avoid the risk question, which is what the whole subject of what my decision is based on. Life is all about risk accessment. Example : - If bad reactions were 1 in 10, I wouldnt get the vaccination if the odds of catching the disease was 1 in 20. Simple! There are other reasons for vaccinations, but due to my adverse reaction I cannot think about herd immunity or protecting the public. My child is at risk, just as she inherited my blue eyes, she could have inherited an allergic reaction to a component of the whooping cough vaccine.

One in 3 of us get Cancer, but the doctor chooses to harp on about Diptheria, which doesnt even exist any more in the UK and is less than a 1 in 60 million chance. How about advice on bringing our baby up with 5 fruit and veg, a natural diet and exercise, limiting her junk food and teaching the dangers of cigarettes. We can most likely expect this sales woman technique everytime my girlfriend goes the doctors about a sniffle, as just like a sales woman, she knows my girlfriend is the weakest link to get the sale. We were told straight away that no-one forces you, or will push you into vaccinations, but then the scare mongering starts. Then they argue with you, quoting their terrible experiences years ago. I have now got refered to someone else, most likely as I asked dificult questions. Its only subtle at first, but you can sense that vaccinations is the main subject of the day behind all that good general baby advice - which is appreciated.

Its a clever system and there is no possible way most people will ever realise the dangers. After all, of course you would trust your family Doctor. Would you still trust her if you found out achieving a certain percentage of vaccinations is linked to her financial gain? A shame Doctors have to be the ones selling the vaccinations, because I never wanted to fall out with someone who is responsible for my childs health. Thats all changed now after Dr williams allegedly tried to get my girlfriend to go behind my back a few days ago without signing my form. And no - she hasnt signed my form (next post)

I noticed that both of you supplied a reference "http://www.thinktwice.com/," but did you look at the disclaimer before taking their data into consideration?

http://www.thinktwice.com/disclaim.htm

Your kids that are 18 & 13 are healthy, and that's awesome.  They have good immune systems.  But, part of the reason they're so healthy is because they're "most likely" surrounded by others who are vaccinated (decreasing the likelihood of infection).  I don't think it's good to compare your kids to others in their class.  Everyone's built differently and some are born with more immunity than others.  Therefore, I don't see how that correlation can be made.  That's kind of like saying people who eat ice cream have an increased risk of drowning (people eat ice cream in the summer, and people swim in the summer).

I'm not sure about this statement:
"Since your other kids have a bad reaction to the DTP vaccine, there is a VERY good chance your young daughter will too"
and I'm not sure which source you used, but if it's www.thinktwice.com then it's most likely not going to be very accurate.  But if it's on that website, among many others, then I apologize and good job researching.

I just want to express the importance of educating yourself.  Even responses on this forum are very inaccurate.  You have no idea if I'm 12 or 87.  That's the beauty of the internet.  But luckily, websites are required to have disclaimers when making claims.

Just say "NO" to vaccines.  There is NO safe vaccine.  My kids are 18 & 13, neither one of them have had their vaccines & they are very healthy.  They miss less school than their vaccinated classmates.  Depending on which state you live in, you can have a religious, philosophical or medical exemption.  Since your other kids have a bad reaction to the DTP vaccine, there is a VERY good chance your young daughter will too.  Please do your homework before you go foward with this vax, I know you will make the right choice.

I am a new mother and have been debating vaccinating my child since before he was born!  Every parent has their own individual right to make the right choice for their own child, and every child will react differently.  However, as I continue to research, I find that vaccines are too much of a risk to put my child in and I am leaning towards not vaccinating.  Here is a website specifically about the DTP and DTaP.  www.thinktwice.com/dpt.htm  Good luck.

My son developed seizures within 4 hours of his 6 month shots.  It was thought to be most likely a reaction to the pertussis part.  AT about 16 months of age I was talked into giving a DT vaccine and my son reacted with more siezures, stopped talking and within 2 months was diagnosed with Autism.  It is believed that his reaction is due to some predisposition due to a mitochondrial dysfunction.  To get a definite diagnosis he will have to undergo a muscle biopsy so we are not running to get this done. I cannot give you any comfort in this.  Good luck to your family.

The DTP is a tricky vax. The "T" part is what most children react to, and the "P" part is what most parents whan their children to recieve. Unfortuantely, they do not make a separate "P" vax as of now, so to get the pertussis protection, it's DTP or nothing. The "D" part has been much less of an issue since they began using an inactivated form of the diptheria virus.

Personally, both of my children reacted badly to DTP. DD was ok with the first 2 in the series, but by the 3rd booster had a huge localized reaciton (red, hot swollen, had to monitor for 6-8 wks). At her 4y visit several months ago she got the 4th booster and it was horrific. Her arm swelled up and was reddish purple. It was hard as a rock, and so hot. She was on Motrin and Claritin for a week and we had to monitor her closely. The ped finally contested that she should not get another booster. Apparently if the reaction spreads beyond the joints (which it did on her shoulder and elbow) it can cause permanent joint damage. Nice.

So, now we're in the situation where my child can not recieve another tetnus vax because it may harm her. I wish I would have spread them out more.

DS is only 6m and he's had 2 DTPs and will not get another until he's much older and his blood work demonstrates a need.

I have 2 of the 4 had the old DPT shots with fevers and fussiness  My younger 2 were just fine with the first sets of the shots but my son had a bad reaction to what they think was the pertussis portion and had a very large, local red swelling reaction that was about 9" long X 6" wide on his upper arm.  He was on Benadryl and Motrin for days.  Not enough for it to be deemed dangerous but enough that his ped said next booster we will split up the shots and avoid the pertussis.

BTW, I think you can split the vaccines up and give them one by one but it may cost more $
