Delete Posts

Make posts that the person has posted deletable.  For example sometimes you submit twice and would like to delete one, there needs to be a way for the poster to delete their own posts.

You will have to contact MedHelp, you can use this link:

http://www.medhelp.org/contactus.htm

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to make a general comment that it's always SO important when joining any site, to read the terms you're agreeing to.  While I understand the argument that was presented a few years ago on this thread, it's really a moot point to argue about something you yourself agreed to when signing up, not to mention, MOST public sites similar to MH have the same guidelines and policies in place.  It benefits the members, so that people cannot willy nilly post, get answers, and delete.  That would cause confusion, and quite frankly, if that started happening, I know I (along with many others) wouldn't be so willing to spend my time answering posts, if they were to just disappear.

So, ALWAYS read and understand the rules....especially before you want to get outraged over something that you've agreed to.  If deletion of your own posts is important, then look carefully at the TOS before joining a new site.

If you make any such submission, you automatically grant, or warrant that the owner of such content has expressly granted MedHelp a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide nonexclusive license to use, reproduce, create derivative works from, modify, publish, edit, translate, distribute, perform, and display the communication or content in any media or medium, or any form, format, or forum now known or hereafter developed. MedHelp may sublicense its rights through multiple tiers of sublicenses."

Please note that you are granting MedHelp a perpetual, irrevocable worldwide nonexclusive license. Therefore, there is no legal right to remove old posts, since you have granted us an irrevocable right to use it.  I don't remember signing a contract, however I accept when I signed up to be part of your forum this will be somewhere in the small print. just before you hit the I accept button. I still feel strongly that the author of any post should be able to delete that which they have created for legitimate reasons.

I am now leaving your forums as I do not like the idea that a note shared with another can be there for all to see and I do like privacy or at least the right to it if needed. There is no particular post I wish to be deleted, I was merely pointing out the right to delete that which I had created "should be my choice". In view of the gobbledegook you presented me with then I have no option but to accept what you say.I am leaving the forums and I do this with regret  I would like to thank all my fellow posters for their support and help, it was very much appreciated. To some extent I think we should all be aware of what we sign up to in computer land. I refuse to contribute to a forum where I do not have a say in what happens to my contributions. Again people were only asking for a delete button, not refusing to contribute. I accept that to some extent we are responsible for what we sign up to and accept, yes I am at fault for not reading the small print. I expect a lot of your forum contributors will be careful about what they type in forums. bye bye

It seems that this conversation has turned quite controversial. If we were to argue the legal side of this matter, it could go on and on, so I want to clarify what MedHelp's official stance is on this:

Swampy is correct that the Data Protection Act applies only to UK companies, which MedHelp is not. Therefore, if you use the site, you are bound by US laws.

However, as Jac567 has stated, U.S. copyright laws should then be in place. But by signing up for MedHelp and participating in the site, you agree to abide by the terms of service, which is quoted below:

"User Submissions

You agree that you will not upload or transmit any communications or content of any type that infringes upon or violates any rights of any party. By submitting communications or content to any part the MedHelp Site, you agree that such submission is non-confidential for all purposes.

However, because of what Jac567 terms "manners" we do allow members to REQUEST that specific old posts be deleted through the Contact Us form. And if there is no valuable medical content and no one has commented on the post (it would be unfair to delete other people's information or the basis for their information), we may consider deleting that old post. If there is valuable medical content, we reserve the right to deny the request. Each request is evaluated separately.

So, to sum up, from a legal perspective, we do NOT have to remove old posts. From a "manners" perspective, we will consider it. If this is all a hypothetical question, I think it's time to return to medical discussions on this site, rather than discuss hypothetical situations.

Jac567 - If you would like to continue this discussion or debate, please send a request through Contact Us, but I hope that this has clarified our position.

It sounded more like a threat.

Now you're citing U.S. copyright law?

You think part of this site belongs to you now?

So...is percentage of ownership based on number of posts, or quality of posts, or how does that go? I have a lot of posts...

And just where does mannners play into all this?
Swampy's poor form with his assertion that you don't understand the law that you are threatening Medhelp with?
Is that bad manners?
Or is it Medhelp who is being taken to the woodshed for their bad manners because they don't run their site by your rules?

Wait! I have it! Bad manners is when you come into my house and threaten legal action if I don't install the carpet of your choice in my living room.

That IS rude, and presumptuous as well.

"So stop posting.
Or stop posting things you wish you had not said.
How hard is that? "

I have no regrets about anything I have posted, I have received lots and lots of support from these forums. However the right to delete OLD post is an option we should have. The argument that an archive will help new comers is not a valid one as the same questions get asked over and over again.

"The law that applies is the law of the place in which the servers are based, and because Medhelp servers are based in the US, they fall under US law.

The Data Protection Act is UK law. "

There is somethings which ought to be law in any country and it is called MANNERS.

US Copyright Law - and patents "When a work has more than one author, the authors can have joint ownership". We are constantly reminded that these are our forums and lots of useful suggestions such as adding trackers were noted and added to the forums.

I noticed this suggestion to delete old post in previous post and was speaking hypothetically  "for you to stop ownership of our post" I was expressing that the autor is the owner and ought to have a say if a post can be deleted or not.

"I will just start an instant message board and incite support for you to stop ownership of our post. In fact I feel so strongly about this feature I may leave these """""Good WELL supported forums"""". If you need to get your figures up then ask people to hit a counter when they log in."  I was merly expressing how strongly I and others feel about the inability to delete old post.

So stop posting.
Or stop posting things you wish you had not said.
How hard is that?

You don't own one pixel of anything you post here. It is not "your" anything, unless you own the site.

Go start a blog or whatever and incite to your heart's content.
You don't have any free speach rights or ownership rights on any discussion board, unless you own the board.

I feel strongly that individuals should have the ability to delete post submitted, yes I accept that an archive of post would be useful to newcomers. However you must accept that the same questions get asked over and over again. Also under the data protection act you do not own "our" post, so we should have the ability to delete our post. I feel very strongly about this and if this option is not implemented then I will just start an instant message board and incite support for you to stop ownership of our post. In fact I feel so strongly about this feature I may leave these good well supported forums. If you need to get your figures up then ask people to hit a counter when they log in.

Posts are meant to be a library of information for future viewers. The case where you post a question, get an answer and then delete it is the reason why we would not implement this feature. If there is medical value in that question and answer, we want to retain it and make it available for other members. If you delete it, other people may never find the answer they were looking for.

Thanks for the suggestion, but for now, please send your requests to Customer Support through the Contact Us form (http://www.medhelp.org/contactus.htm) so that we may review it and then decide whether or not to delete the post.

Posts should be delete (able?) . If you ask a question and get it answered you may not want that post visible on your home page forever.  Make it easy for the member to delete their own posts.

It should be easier than that, there should be a delete button!  There are many post that cause drama on some forums and its easier to just delete it than worry about it!

If you accidentally post something twice, please let us know. We can delete them for you. Just send us a message through the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page and provide us with the URLs of the duplicate posts. Thanks!
