what type of symptoms is your roommate experiencing? My biggest issue has been upset/bubbling/gurgling stomach for 3.5 months now.
I actually haven't been tested for that, but I probably could try to soon.
Hi bhb89w - have you tested for HTLV? I think of all the posters on here only Asher has gotten tested and was negative. Would be interesting to see if other people tested negative as we could rule that out.
I haven't posted on here in a while, but share a great amount of symptoms. I've been dealing with on and off symptoms for 2 years. I've been tested for all major std's. Also tested for all heps and HIV. Negative for everything. I'm mainly posting because a roommate of mine (also male) is now having the exact same symptoms that I have. We only share a bathroom, which means this isn't just transmitted sexually if he has somehow gotten it. I'm going back to get tested for candida as soon as I can. Has anybody encountered low sex drives or erectile dysfunction problems with this?
Hey Rocko,
Thanks for the feedback man. I appreciate it. I'm waiting for results from gastro and then will go visit my PCP and see what he thinks of HTLV test. Just with all these combination of things hitting at once (especially the ongoing gassy stomach and change in bowel movements) I feel like its got to be something traditional screens aren't catching.
Hi jaguar7,
The short answer to your question is no I did not get tested for HTLV. I did ask my ID specialist about it but she did not feel the need of testing for it. I do not think she knew a great deal about the virus as she mentioned that unless I was suffering of leukemia, there was no need for testing for HTLV.
Leukemia and HAM/TSP (HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis) are the end result of the HTLV virus after many years of the virus laying dormant (20 years plus in most cases) and that end result is only in a small percentage of people affected by the virus (2 to 5% depending on which web site you're collecting the data from)
In my situation, symptoms started 5 days after my exposure...much too soon for HTLV who usually won't show symptoms for many months in some cases, but more often then not it take years if not decades for initial symptoms to appear.
Also, the types of initial symptoms associated with HTLV (stiffness or weakness of the legs, partial loss of bladder or bowel control, impotence and lower back pain, lung infection, constipation) aren't the symptoms that I was having...and still have in some cases. The only one that I could relate to it is the frequent need to urinate...which is also a symptom of 100's of other viruses, parasites, bacteria infections.
It's also a very difficult virus to transmit. On a few sites out there, there's a rough estimate that in a relationship between 2 people for 5 years, the chances of passing the virus to your partner is around 7-10%.
I highly doubt your issues are related to HTLV but if it's on your mind, get tested and clear your conscience. Now if you do get tested for it, be careful of the test results...there's a lot of false positives with HTLV.
Hope this info helps and wish you all the best.
Rocko
