19 y/o Cant Sleep Mind races all night

I’m 19 y/o male, and for many many years iv had trouble falling asleep takes me on average 3-4 hours to fall asleep even tho I’m tired and yawning i just lay there and cant fall asleep.
Iv  been to doctors when i was younger because my mother thought i had A.D.D but the doctor said i just had an "active imagination" was never sure what that really meant.
If I’m not truly interesting in something i can never focus on it, i have trouble though out the day remembering what my boss asks me to do minutes after he tells me, Sometimes i find my self nodding and saying okay okay and responding to what he is saying and when he walks away i realize "hey i have no idea what he just said"
I think this same problem is why i cant sleep.
I lay there and  day dream and play things over in my head and i cant stop it, once i eventually fall asleep from exhaustion, i dream all night and i remember my dreams in the morning like they really happened in full detail, and i don’t dream just 2 or 3 times a week i have vivid dreams in full detail every single night, and when i wake up in the morning I’m just as tired as when i went to bed.
I have a anxiety about flying in airplanes and recently my doctor gave me Xanax to take before i fly and i took the Xanax last week and after i took it my mind felt blank and it wasn’t running in high gear and i was physically more tired from the pill but mentally i felt calm and focused and i just made a new appointment with my doctor for next week and im nervous to tell him this because i don’t want him to think im just trying to get more pills cause im abusing them or something like that..
is there any medication that i could take that better suits my problem?
Ill take any ideas or suggestions and run it by my doc to see what he thinks
Just as a side note, my sleeping conditions as in my bed is very comfortable, my room is pitch black at night, and there are no distracting noises, i live in the country side so its very pleasant around my area.

Try sleeping in a room that is pitch black and void of any distractions.

Sleep medications are only a short-term treatment for insomnia. Most of them do not differ much on efficacy or side effects. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is now the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. See my website for more information on CBT.
