I think that taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid is helpful. If you have a family history of spina bifida or of Irish descent, you should take higher doses of folic acid up to 4mg/day. You should avoid alcohol, smoking, street drugs. You should avoid caffeinated drinks, You should eat healthy, avoiding foods that are high in fats and trans fats. Don't overdo the carbohydrates like white bread, sugar, soft drinks, juices. Drink plenty of good clean water. Eat more whole grain carbohydrates. Do not eat lake or river caught fish or tuna, tile fish, shark, mackeral because they are high in mercury. Wild salmon in moderation is ok. You should exercise regularly. Walking is a great way to exercise. At least 30 minutes to 1 hour every day. If your doctor thinks it is safe, you should do some cardiovascular type exercises like biking, tennnis jogging 3-5x/week. You can increase activities that have been shown to reduce stress like a mind/body programs in meditation, prayer, yoga, qigong, tai chi. You can look on the internet for programs near you. If you are overweight you should see a doctor about weight loss. Ideally your body mass index should be less than 25. If you are too thin BMI <19, that could effect your ovulation and ability to get pregnant.
Other ideas are: take a vacation or go to a spa to relax and be good to yourself (whatever you like to do--do alittle more of it if is is healthy e.g. gardening, arts and crafts. I hope this is helpful. All the best!
