Hi Katie, It's true that some patients with IC respond dramatically to a hydrodistention. The theory is that the bladder streaching causes a stretch injury to the hypersensitive nerve endings in your bladder, desensitizing them and relieving symptoms. Most people (60-70%) after hydrodistention get some relief but its usually temporary lasting 3-6 months, then the symptoms slowly recur. I have a few patients where the relief lasts for years and hydrodistention is their only effective treatment. You still have IC and symptoms could flare up again with the right trigger. Be careful of what you eat and drink. I hope your symptoms stay away for a long time.
Go to the ICA website ichelp.org It will give you the ICA diet details. Foods that are acidic, have caffein, alcohol, most fruits, processed foods in cans are on the list. I've found that many patients are dramatically better by just eliminating the things in their diet that make their symptoms worse. Diet control is the first step in symptom control.
Katie
I'm glad your feeling so much better.
Though there are many treatments that can help improve and reduce symptoms even cause a remission in pain and symtoms(which can also happen sponatniously) that can last for many months and soemetimes many years. There is no cure for IC so symtoms can come back at any point.
Some like you have had great success and have gone into remission for years and have never felt the pain and pressure since. But no one treatment will work for everyone and there is no cure for IC.
I do hope your IC does stay in this state though.
TMA
Do you know what food and drink to avoid?
