urethra

having stinging pain upon urination.( worse in the morning time than in the afternoon and night. warm shower helps).had urine cultures x 3 which has been negative. seen gyn-no inflammation seen around the vaginal area. std test negative. last year had the same symptoms but had a UTI. took cipro which killed the bacteria however, the burning/stinging pain upon urination was still present. saw a urologist had a kidney scan which was normal and another test where a catheter was inserted inside the urethra which was normal as well. after the test few days later symptoms totally gone.

now dealing with the same burning/stinging pain upon void, feels like inside of the urethra the skin is damaged but not sure. any suggestions.

I'm glad you had the cystoscopy.  The diameter of the scope itself causes a dilation of the urethra as its passed into the bladder.  The amount of fluid each Urologist uses for the cystoscopy is variable.  It sounds like your maximum bladder capacity is 300cc which is normal.  I can't explain what the cystoscopy did to relieve your pain.  Some patients get symptom relief from a formal urethral dilation that can be done in the office without a cystoscopy.  I'm happy your symptoms are almost gone.

thank you both for your reply back. i appreciate your comments. i was ruled out for std's and pap smear test all negative. i had a  Cystoscopy done this tuesday and immediately felt better the day after. i believe somehow the act of inserting something in the urethra has contributed to me feeling a litter better. i can definitely see that the flow of urine is a lot faster than before. one question i have for you dr. burks is what casues the dilation. Is it the act of a catheter inserted into the urethra is what opens up the urethra or the amount of fluid that is instilled in the bladder that dilates it. the reason i am asking this because last year when i had cytoscopy done i remember my bladder being really full about 300ml and since i went to a new urologist this week he filled my bladder with 100ml and my bladder didn't feel as full. i would say 48hrs. after cyto. i feel better but i still have very minimal stinginess present on the right side. i thank you in advance. have a great day.

Hi,  this doesn't sound like Interstitiala Cystitis.  You don't describe urinary frequency, urgency or bladder pain with filling.  Dysuria can be caused by a non bacterial infection (nonspecific urethritis) which is usually caused by chlamydia, mycoplasma or other STD. Women can get the infection in the periurethral glands of the urethra causing pain.  Another cause of dysuria is a urethral diverticulum, an outpouching of the lining of the urethra into the vagina causing a bubble to form that can hold urine and get infected.  Interstitial Cystitis usually doesn't cause only dysuria but has frequency and urgency as well.  Your Urologist may need to look into your bladder with a cystoscope to rule out a problem. A few soaps with perfume can cause local irritation to the meatus if soap gets into the vagina.  Start with a followup appt with your Urologist.  Good Luck

When they did the cathedar test do you know if they put any medication in the bladder after the test? I'm assuming you had the potassium test? I know my doctor put some medication in after the potassium test but she didn't tell me. I just wonder if they gave you something in the bladder to help with any irritation from the potassium solution. Since you said you felt better afterward.
