I had a bladder infection every month last year. Went to a urologist, he did a cystoscopy and found nothing wrong. He dilated my urethra, said it was scarred. I had a small cystocele, which I had repaired in Dec of last year. I have had 4 bladder infections since. I've had only 3 cultures done in all that time. One grew nothing, which I dont understand because my urine was bloody and looked suspicious in the dr.'s office. I was having chills, extreme pain all the time, frequency, urgency, etc. One they said they couldn't culture, and one that grew bacteria. I am now allergic to Septra and Macrobid. Amoxicillin doesn't work for me. I have pain and burning a lot. I have an appt. with an urologist this week.
Hi Dr Burks,
About a year ago I was diagnosed with Cystisis and had the full procedure done to make sure the diagnoses was right. The urologist recommended that I waited for a year which is the time when most patients can determined if its gone or not. Well, mine is still there. Not as frequent or uncomrtable as it used to be but it is still there and it has affected my relationship w/my bf. He has been patient but it has gotten to a point that I dont want to be touched for the discomfort it causes when having intercourse.
I am currently taking ELMIRON but I am interested in knowing if there is ANY other way that i can use or take to control/stop this. I cant take it anymore!
Hi, the question is what is the diagnosis? Burning can be caused by a bacterial infection, that usually shows up on a urine culture. I assume your doctor has done cultures but they now come back without infection. Multiple courses of antibiotics have been ineffective. This may not be a simple urinary tract infection. Other causes of burning include a urethral diverticulum, a small pocket below the urethra that fills with urine when you void that can cause a burning sensation. There is a disorder called Interstitial Cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder wall and urethra that can cause the burinig sensation. It is usually seen with urinary frequency and urgency hich you did not mentio your had. You basically need to be seen by a Urologist who can to a cystoscopy-- pass a this scope thru the urethra to rule out a structural problem and take it from there. Good Luck.
My doctor put me on potassium citrate, and I can honestly say, it did help with the pain. I think it has something to do with your urine being to acidy.
Just a thought. It worked for me.
re antibiotics not working all the time.... apparently it seems pretty common these days. if your pills aren't working, talk to your pharmacist. Request that your pills be exchanged for some from a different batch.
We have a few family members that this has happened to. Once the pills were changed, they worked.
Good luck!
Hello,
I'm not a doctor but it really sounds to me that you do have cystisis, I am 20 and been suffering from it since 18 from time to time, several times a year and each time it gets worse and worse :(. Anyways some antibiotics they put me on, work and on two occasions they haven't. I guess with antiobiotics it's imporant that they're taken properly and not too often to make sure that they really kill the bacteria and don't become resistant to the drug. My other advice would be to drink lots and lots of cranberry juice, if you don't like the taste, then cranberry tablets does the job too, if not better. And one can be taken everyday to keep a healthy urinary tract and prevent you from getting cystits in the first place. I had an episode of cystisis about a week or so ago, and instead of antibiotics I just used drank LOTS of cranberry juice and LOTS of water and this helped. But yeah I think it's defiently cysitis and that the antibiotics they put you on didn't work this time, it happens sometimes.
