Is this IBS...

3 Years ago while riding with my husband in an 18-wheeler, I had a huge flare up of colitis. I had never ever had any sort of digestive problems before that day. We had a fight on the road and were at the point of splitting my nerves were shot to say the least. It started with being unable to eat, no appetite at all, then a sharp stabbing pain on my right side behind my rib cage, then total liquid diarrhea every few miles we were stopping and I was doubled over in pain. By the time we made it home that night, I went to the ER. They did a CT and found my colon to be severly inflammed. They immediately began steriods and contacted my family doc to make a preliminary surgical decision. he did not want them to do a resection at that time, then... I had no idea what a resection of the colon even was. Okay... immediately after they began giving me morphine thru IV I was starving. Wanting to eat anything. They would give me nothing however. They did a Colonoscopy on day 3 and said there appeared to be slight ulcerations in the right upper quadrent of the colon. but, that they thought that they were because of the diarrahea I had been having, that they were not previously there. they discharged me on day5 on pain meds and i consulted with another specialist who read the reports from the hospital and said the colonoscopy results seemed to show some sort of an obstructive colitis... he felt I was much too young to have any natural obstruction, so he wanted to do a bunch of heart test to see the probability that I had thrown a blood clot that caused the obstruction. Anyways to make a long story short, I have continued to have bouts with this... more on than off. I usually try to control it with immodium and ibuprofen. I have not been back to a dr. about this except when I was pregnant I was in a lot of pain in the same area. That dr reviewed results and did his own testing and concluded that he felt i had IBS. Here are my symptoms...
Frequent diarrhea
Pain in the right upper quadrant of the colon
Stress, Stress, Stress
Could I say more... what is this?

For the record...my pain is mostly on the right too....it can show up elsewhere on occasion...but for the most part....on the right.

I appreciate your response... That is what I keep wondering about... everyone talks about having pain in the left side, not the right? But, when I had the hospital flare up, it was my right side then too... I dont know... our bodies are so complex it is hard to make a definate diagnosis. Especially, when doctors see things different ways also.

Actually it could be IBS. I too have IBS - D, but I never had pain in the right upper quadrant of the colon. Stress is another major cause of an IBS flare up.

My honest opinion, I would seek another doctors opinion - just to be sure.
