Should I be tested for Diverticulitis?

I have had IBS for 17 years now and have managed to get buy with a simple diet change and trying to reduce stress in my life. My father was diagnosed with diverticulitis awhile back and ended up having a for and a half of his Bowels removed.

My, fresh out of med school, family Dr. refused to send me to a gastrointestinal specialist because they are too busy and he doesn't want to inconvenience them.

Is Diverticulitis hereditary?
