thanks for reply, does the insoluble fiber to soluble fiber ratio of the food not matter? eg berries have a high insoluble fiber to soluble fiber ratio, yet are still recommended when have diarrhoea or IBS.
is the insoluble fiber to soluble fiber ratio not the most important factor?
HI,
Yes on should minimise insoluble fibre when having diarrhoea. This is because insoluble fibre cannot be broken down. When the intestines cannot break down a food, gas is produced. Insoluble fibre is a GI tract stimulant and hence can aggravate the diarrhoea.
For people with IBS, fibre reduces IBS symptoms and on the other hand soluble fibre such as pasta, rice, baked potatoes, and oatmeal, can be soothing because it helps bind loose stools. Also persons with IBS should avoid carbonated beverages, alcohol and caffeine.
