Swollen lower colon

HI, can someone tell me what i might be dealing with. My lower ascending colon keeps swelling up. I dont know if it is gyny related or irritable bowel? I feel quite windy alot and it feels uncomfortable most of the time. I can literally watch it swell up and then the area is hard and sore?
Any Ideas?????

Ive had irritable bowel syndrome for about the last 20 years, and learned to manage it pretty well with a restricted diet, but never had the "swollen colon" problem till about 7 years ago, and now I'm realizing it seems to be connected to this old rental house I'm living in. Which has some known issues like rodent infestations, asbestos, and lead paint. So exposure to toxins might be a factor? I find that a vegetarian, raw diet, often supplemented with yogurt usually helps the IBS a lot, also avoiding coffee, black teas, carbonated beverages and chocolate, which all seem to be "trigger foods" for me. But not since I started having problems at this house. Nothing seems to help, except just getting out of the place! I suspect the paint, which was new when I moved in, but is now deteriorating, but I cant seem to find any specific info about how long term exposure to lead paint, effects adults? Would it effect the digestive tract, as far as causing pain and swelling? Maybe what is being diagnoses as IBS could also be the early stages of asbestos or other toxing caused illnesses? Seems to me like industry and society is trying to avoid accountability for that type of exposure. There'd be a whole lot more lawsuits if the truth were known. I think they dont want to see companies and property owners socked with those kind of expenses? Somebody has just decided it is bad for business and the economy, maybe?

I have had stomach pain from my upper stomach into both sides and down towards my lower colon, under my belly button.  The pain comes and goes at different times.  Sometimes the pain is gone, yet it feels like a rock is moving around or sitting in my lower intestine.  So far, I've had a blood draw.  My blood results were fine.  I had a Cat Scan, which, came up good.  I also did a stool sample that my doctor tested for Giardia, and that came out fine also.  Next, I am going to see a Gastroenterologist.

Today, my lower stomach is poking out like a rock is just sitting there.  I can't wait to get my referral approved for the Gastro Dr.  Alex2Carmen, I admire you for all that you have delt with.  I hope you are doing ok my friend.

I would suspect the kidney's might play a part in this. Possibly reabsorbing acid, and loosing important vitamins and minerals thatare vital to the digestive system. It's worth looking in to. Ask you doctor to run some test.

it seems like the medicine asacol that the doctor prescribed to be take 3 times a day (3 pills) 9 altogether has made my ulcerative colitis worse.  I have pain in my upper stomach and it feels like indigestion a bad case of it and gas as well.  My doctor has'nt seemed very concerned about it but it is very painful and incomfortable and I wanted to know if I should see another doctor or get a new type of medicine.  I always fell like I haven'nt finished when I do go to the bathroom.

Alexander you are one of the first people in the world I have hear of having the same symptoms as I do.  The doctors have never diagnosed me with anything except trying to put me in a hospital with an eating dissorder.  I eat all the time and it just runs right through me!  Yesterday I went to the doctors with my left side swollen out and extream pain and it has been that way for days!  She told me it was gas.  For some reason I just don't think so.  Earlier this year I went from 105lbs to 87lbs.  That was with me eating like a trucker.  My doctor told me yesterday that my colon was swollen and shes not worried.  Yet two days prior to me goin in the office I had a 102 degree temprepature and had blisters form all over my face.  I have perfect smooth skin so this is  a big deal to me!  Any time my emotions run on full force I throw up my doctors have yet after three years of serious syptoms have yet to run the tests that they have ran on you.  Last week I weighed in at 110 and yesterday I was back down to 104?  I have had problems all my life its just getting super bad now.  Thanks for listening to me vent.
Love-

Hi irishpaw, i have exact the same problem as you described above. coincidentally, my Co-worker has the same problem. i clearly see my right  colon is swollen and constantly gives me the feeling that my colon is swelling up and can feel every move of it. often it causes pain and pain stretches along my right ribcage and up along my spinal cord. i had all kinds of tests exams done, you just name it. blissfully i have a very good insurance with zero Co-payment, so i had my Doc run all exams. colonoscopy, endoscopy, cat scan, x-rays, ultra sound, nothing was found to put the blame on. Doctors believe it is irritable bowl syndrome (IBS). of course they do not have explanation for IBS, how it starts and the source of it. but i do know something on my own experience. in late 80s i had several severe adversed reaction against antibiotics. in early 90s i had one last one, from which all my health problems started their journey. i had non-stop diarrhea, sweating, chilled, nauseous, grunting, burping, a very serious nerve collapse. all in all my condition was infernal. everything i ate it came out within a minute in liquid diarrhea. everyday i was dropping couple of pounds. from 160 lb. went down to 120 lb. i am a male 5.8, and always in good shape, until ir all begun to rock my entire anatomy. i didn't have any pain or specific area on my body that i could point out tot he problem. Doctors in Armenia have diagnosed me with Disbacterious. which means, antibiotics can exterminate micro floral bacterias that are very essential for the intestines, particularly colon to digest food and absorb vitamins and nutrition. from which other organs will also suffer. intestines have very vital role in human body. intestines supply nutrition to all organs, because intestines are the only ones to absorb all necessary vitamins and distribute throughout the entire body. my belief is that my right colon could have been damaged from those antibiotics that i have had injected on my right buttock. naturally organs near that area will be affected first. one thing that i forgot to apply is that after colonoscopy was done a biopsy test returned a Helicobacter Pylori bacteria. my Dr. prescribed a treatment course, which the first treatment failed to eradicate, but second treatment with combination of 4 medicine, which two of them were antibiotics. tetracycline i believe did the most job. after this treatment my stool have stabilized dramatically. i never had a solid stool after 1990 since the antibiotic reaction and before the treatment. this colon swelling feeling i started experiencing las a few years. but light irritations i have had even back in 90s when it all started. it's a strange phenomena i shall say, that Doctors have no idea what might it be. recently i started taking some probiotics containing lactobacillus made by Culturelle. it seems to be  helping to reduce my back and heap pain and discomfort. people that were born and raised in colder regions might have higher chances to having this kind of problems due to cold weather conditions and antibiotics used to treat sicknesses associated with cold weather. this is just my speculation based on my personal experience. i came to USA from cold country of Armenia, where easy to get sick in the winter times. at least once a year you might get sick if not twice a year. i really do not know what triggers all these problems. i am cold weather sensitive too. my body reacts almost on anything. emotions will suddenly upset my stomach and all that. sorry for my long long fairy tale but unfortunately is the truth and anguish i live with.
good luck with a resolution!

regards,
Alexander

Andy, consider a colon cleanse.  The gas you are experiencing could be from constipation.  A regular laxative may help, but the bloating and hardening you are speaking of sounds like you need a cleanse. Most people do not realize what causes that bloating and gas, but it comes from the bowels not emptying healthily over a long period of time.  Hope this helps you.
