Renal Onocytoma

I am a female with a 4.5 centimeter mass on my left kidney.  My urologist had a biopsy done and I was told that
the mass is renal onocytoma tumor.  At this point my urologist did another CT scan after six months (in December).
He told me that these types of tumors should be closely monitored.  If a future CT scan shows any growth, he may once again order a biopsy.  I trust my urologist, but just wanted to know if this "wait and see" is what is normally done with this type of tumor.
Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your reply!
My urologist did a biopsy right after the tumor was discovered.  In fact he had the tests run twice at two different labs before he called with the results.  It was the longest 12 days in my life.
I just wanted to know if the "waiting" part if normal with these types of tumors?  My urologist had the second CT scan done to check to see if there has been any growth in the tumor since last May (the size is still the same).  I'm not quite sure what he's checking for in my upcoming visit in March (tumor or stones???).  He did tell me that they can be "nasty" tumors to deal with because they can also mask cancer.  I've never heard of these particular types of tumors.  Are they very common?
I have also been dealing with the issue of kidney stones in that kidney.  After a 1.7 centimeter stone caused a blockage last June.  First a stent to push the stone out and now three lithotripsies have reduced the stone to a single 4 millimeter stone.

Thanks again!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello there,
Renal oncocytoma is a type of benign renal tumour. It may be difficult to distinguish between it and renal malignancy.   Renal cell carcinoma and other neoplasms form a closest differential to this condition. The final diagnosis depends on pathological examination and regular follow-up is imperative for patients with renal oncocytoma. If you are not satisfied with your doctors opinion it is suggested to seek second opinion by an experienced nephrologist. This is merely and advice and not a substitute for clinical examination. For more queries and assistance visit a nephrologist. A clinical evaluation may be necessary. Hope it helps.
Good luck and take care!
