Kidney pain and certain RX meds

My father had some mild renal dysfunction due to a couple of MRI-Contrasts he had, and in combination with a bad diet, his kidneys were acting up a year or two ago. WIth some changes, his renal function is pretty much back to normal (88 % according to his dr which is good). He sees a nephrologist periodically who is of no help now. His issue is severe kidney pain when he takes certain medications, like an antibiotic or pain meds. He has a fungal infection in his sinuses and was taking an antiobiotic that seemed to help, but his kidneys 'light up" as he calls it, and it is unbearable pain. He also thinks his recurrent back pain is kdney pain, though his nephrologist thinks the pain is coming from something else. What he is troubled by though, is all it takes is some bad food or certain medications and his kidney pain is severe. It goes away once he stops the med, but he is worried that one of these days, a severe infection will "do him in" since certain antibiotics both his kidneys. Is there a medical term for this? Does anyone else have kidney pain with certain meds, etc?

It is very common for people to experience kidney pain, even straight after taking a medication or "bad" food or drink - this partly due to the fact that your kidneys need to eliminate the "toxins", but also because the adrenal glands are placed under stress because of it. The adrenal glands are our "anti-stress" glands, and they literally sit on top of the kidneys like a hat. So what affects the adrenals, affects the kidneys, and vice versa.

The other important thing to remember is that certain medications (e.g. anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories, and analgesics) cause kidney disease if taken over an extended period of time. Though in some sensitive people (possibly your father), these drugs can cause acute kidney disease (=quick deterioration).

If possible, have your father try natural remedies instead to see if they make a difference.

My father has no kidney infection.. his urine is checked frequently and his renal numbers are pretty good. And ibuprofen is a no-no so he doesnt take any anti-inflammatories. It is very frustrating how he needs certain anti biotics because of his severe sinus problems and cant take them due to severe kidney pain when he takes them. He is frustrated that the doctors cant really do anything, and they cant explain the constant kidney pain he has.

kidney infections can cause severe back pain trust me I have had many. And yes medicines can cause kidney pain as well. Before I knew better when I would take ibuprofin my kidney would hurt. sinus/throat infectiions can sometimes cause kidney infections as well. Not often but it can happen. Usually the back is the first place that hurts known as the flank area that will hurt when you have a kidney infection.  But I have had kidney pain and no infection and was caused by medicines. hope that helps
