UPJ obstrution?

Hello I am 16 years old and I've been having kidney problems since september 08. It all started with a kidney stone and many UTI's. Ever since the stone I've had throbbing sharp back pain, trouble getting urine to pass, not being able to pass urine for extended amount of times and I've had bacteria and blood in my urine but no infections. I have had about 5 ultrasounds and countless urine tests. I have been to 2 different pediatric urologists and both have no answears for me. They claim it could possilby be normal. But I don't think so. My brother has an upj in his left kidney. My pain is on the right. I really don't know whats wrong. I had an mri done on my back to see if its something else but nothing showed up. I've also had a test called uro dinamics where they fill the bladder with water and see what happens with a scanner. I had some un normal symptons show up in that but nothing they could put there finger on. I am getting sick and tired of having pain attacks where I nearly scream and everytime I go to the ER they always just do an ultrasound and can't figure it out..I haven't been in a while tho. I just want some answears and if anyone has any information or can relate please let me know...The doctors have suggested I go to Boston Childrens and I probaly will if this doesn't stop.
Thanks,
Bethany

My symptons include:
Sharp flank pain
Trouble passing urine
Pain when passing urine
Very tired
Cloudy urine
Nausea
Sometimes odd colored urine

Oh Beth,
If I didn't know any better, I would think you have been to the same urologist I've been to for the past 2 years.

Some of the test that are usually done are called>
ultrasound
IVP
Cat Scan
diuretic renal gram
retrograde pyelogram (they ususally don't do this upfront)

What have they found out with the ultrasound.  Do you have an enlarged renal collecting system?

What did they do about the kidney stone that you had?  You could possibly be passing small stones.  This can cause quite a bit of pain.

Keep me posted
Your in my prayers, Kara

I suggest you have a Mag 3 renal Scan in the X-ray dept at your hospital. It is in the nuclear medicine department. This  should show if you have any issues. You should have it as your brother had a UPJ obstruction which is sometimes congenital. We live in Maine & my son just had this done. They also can scope you without an incision as they did for my son. The Mag 3 renal scan test kidney function & can also see if there is a blockage. Mention this to your doctor. It takes about an hour for the test... Jim
